Position Overview
We are seeking a Part- time Surgical Medical Nurse to join our team. The successful candidate will play a key role in assisting with wide local excisions (WLEs) with knowledge of sterile technique, performing and assisting with cutaneous biopsies, and other dermatologic procedures. This role is ideal for a nurse with prior dermatology or surgical experience who thrives in a high-volume, fast-paced environment while providing exceptional patient-centered care. Previous experience as a dermatology nurse is required and Med Access training is strongly preferred.
Expectations for the Role
- Demonstrate attention to detail and a strong commitment to patient care in a busy environment
- Maintain compliance with clinical protocols and infection-control standards
- Ability to competently understand, follow, and carry out physician orders within scope of practice
- Educate patients on treatments and provide counseling on preventive health care
- Support management of dermatologic conditions (e.g., acne, eczema, rashes, skin cancer, atopic dermatitis, hair loss, skin infections, etc.)
- Support surgical flow efficiency by preparing procedure rooms, stocking supplies, and coordinating with the clinical team
- Observe, assess, monitor, and document patient symptoms, reactions, and progress
- Assist the Dermatologist with procedures such as biopsies, wide local excisions, and other surgeries
- Competency in sterile and autoclave technique (required)
- Provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing treatment including post operative wound care
- Participate in triage and collect assessment data in accordance with clinic policy
- Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory assessment, following clinic protocols
- Perform tasks delegated by the Physician and Clinic Manager
- Document patient encounters completely, including patient consult assessment notes, follow up notes, lab results, pathology reports, and imaging
- Maintain rooms between patients (cleaning & stocking supplies)
- Become knowledgeable on medical-grade skincare products and recommend appropriate at-home regimens to support patient conditions and concerns
Role Qualifications
- Ability to type quickly and accurately for patient documentation
- LPN diploma from an accredited institution
- Current nursing license in good standing with the College of Nurses of Alberta
- Current CPR certification valid within Alberta
- Previous dermatology experience (required)
- Previous outpatient surgical experience is considered an asset
- 2+ years of private or public practice nursing experience
- Experience using MedAccess EMR (preferred)
- Ability to type quickly and accurately for documentation
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Flexible availability, including occasional weekends
