Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Concrete Forming Carpenter specializing in high-rise concrete stairs. The successful candidate will have strong experience laying out, building, installing, and stripping complex stair forms while consistently meeting project drawings, dimensional tolerances, production schedules, and safety requirements.
This position requires someone who can work independently, solve layout and forming challenges, and produce accurate, high-quality work in a fast-paced high-rise construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret structural drawings, architectural drawings, specifications, and stair details.
- Accurately calculate stair rise, run, pitch, landings, elevations, and finished dimensions.
- Lay out and construct concrete stair forms, including stringers, risers, soffits, landings, bulkheads, blockouts, and edge forms.
- Build and install formwork using lumber, plywood, engineered forming systems, and associated hardware.
- Confirm dimensions, elevations, alignment, slope, and form stability before concrete placement.
- Install required bracing, shoring, supports, and access components.
- Coordinate with supervisors, surveyors, reinforcing-steel crews, concrete crews, and other trades.
- Assist during concrete pours and monitor forms for movement, leakage, or other issues.
- Safely strip forms while protecting completed concrete surfaces and form materials.
- Identify drawing conflicts and communicate potential problems before work proceeds.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company policies, project procedures, and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Mentor apprentices and less-experienced carpenters when required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of concrete forming experience, preferably on high-rise projects.
- Proven experience forming cast-in-place concrete stairs and landings.
- Strong knowledge of stair geometry, layout, elevations, and construction tolerances.
- Ability to read and understand structural and architectural drawings.
- Skilled in using levels, lasers, measuring tools, saws, drills, and standard carpentry equipment.
- Knowledge of formwork, shoring, bracing, stripping procedures, and concrete placement.
- Ability to identify and resolve layout or constructability issues.
- Carpentry certification or journeyperson status is an asset but not mandatory with equivalent experience.
- Valid fall-protection, WHMIS, and other required safety certifications are preferred.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work at heights and in changing weather conditions.
