We are seeking a skilled Instrumentation Technician to join our research laboratory team specializing in ion sources and beam transport systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning of complex electronic and electromechanical systems used in the particle accelerator research.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
General
- Support regular preventive maintenance activities for all laboratory equipment
- Perform routine inspections of power supplies, diagnostic instruments, vacuum components, PLCs and control systems
- Diagnose electrical, electronic, and mechanical faults through systematic analysis; repair or replace defective parts
- Address thermal management issues in high-power equipment
- Assist with installation of new ion sources, beamlines, and support systems
Monitor temperatures in thermal management systems

Instrumentation & Testing
- Employ diagnostic tools to measure electrical parameters
- Perform insulation resistance testing with megohmmeters (meggers) and high-potential (hi-pot) testers
- Analyze digital and analog signals using oscilloscopes
Calibrate diagnostic devices and associated instruments for ion sources and beam transport systems

Documentation & Communication
- Maintain comprehensive technical records, schematics, and repair logs
- Communicate technical issues and progress effectively to team members
- Develop technical documentation for lab procedures
Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, repairs, and component replacements

Provides moderately complex technical support for the electrostatic beamlines and stable ion sources
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
- No supervisory or leadership responsibilities.
May provide guidance and assistance to entry level technicians

Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit theory
- Proficiency reading electrical schematics and assembly drawings
- Knowledge of control systems and PLC operation
- Experience with soldering techniques for precision electronics
- Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, DraftSight)
- Strong problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgment, attention to detail and prioritization
Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER (NEW):
Some work will require access to exclusion areas where there are activated components. The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NEW. This is required to access and work in areas that are limited to NEWs, as well as for planning and conducting work in radiation environments. This training will be provided by TRIUMF to the successful candidate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- A diploma in electronics or electrical engineering technology or a similar diploma from a technical institute.
- Minimum of 1 year related experience after technical certification
- Certification in electronics repair or industrial maintenance preferred
Background in high-voltage, electronics and vacuum systems beneficial

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
