Job Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced accounting and finance professional to join our team in a leadership capacity. This role is ideal for a seasoned CPA or finance executive with extensive experience in corporate accounting, taxation, construction financing, and strategic financial management.
The successful candidate will provide high-level financial oversight, mentor the accounting team, and ensure compliance with Canadian and U.S. tax requirements while supporting the organization's continued growth.
This position is designed for an experienced professional who enjoys working in an advisory and leadership role.
Key Responsibilities
- Tax Strategy & Compliance
- Oversee Canadian and U.S. corporate tax compliance, including review of tax filings prepared using specialized tax software.
Financial Leadership
- Provide senior-level accounting guidance and technical support to the finance team.
- Assist staff with complex accounting issues, quarter-end and year-end reporting, and financial analysis.
- Review significant accounting transactions and ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.
- Mentor and develop accounting staff while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
Construction & Project Finance
- Review and approve construction draw requests.
- Oversee financing submissions and lender reporting requirements.
- Monitor project budgets, pro formas, budget-to-actual results, and project financial performance.
- Identify financial risks and recommend corrective actions where required.
Financial Planning & Reporting
- Assist in preparing annual budgets, cash flow forecasts, and long-term financial plans.
- Prepare and present financial information, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to ownership and the Board of Directors.
- Support strategic business planning and financial decision-making.
Banking & Debt Management
- Monitor compliance with debt covenants and annual debt service requirements.
- Coordinate annual lender reporting and covenant calculations.
- Manage mortgage administration, including annual reviews, renewals, and financing documentation.
- Maintain strong relationships with financial institutions and external advisors.
Strategic Advisory
- Provide financial insight to support business growth and investment decisions.
- Evaluate financing opportunities and capital structure.
- Participate in special projects, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives as required.
- Ensure compliance with CRA, IRS, and other regulatory requirements.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and other government agencies.
- Provide strategic tax planning advice, including compensation planning (dividends vs. salary/bonus), corporate structure, and tax minimization strategies.
- Monitor changes in Canadian and U.S. tax legislation and recommend appropriate actions.
Qualifications
- CPA designation (required).
- 10+ years of progressive senior accounting and finance leadership experience.
- Experience as a Director of Finance, Controller, CFO, or Senior Finance Executive.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian corporate taxation and financial reporting.
- Working knowledge of U.S. corporate taxation and cross-border tax compliance.
- Experience in construction accounting, real estate development, or project financing is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
- Experience working with lenders, debt covenants, and mortgage financing.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Proven ability to mentor accounting professionals and provide strategic financial leadership.
