Your Role
Reporting to the Interim Senior Manager, Field Operations, you will supervise the day-to-day activities of field support staff in Toronto and Vancouver, as well as the Ontario Radio-Canada team. You will be responsible for ensuring staff have the technical equipment and support required for field production. This position includes 12 permanent and casual direct reports.
Staying current with emerging technologies is an essential part of this role.
Working closely with the Senior Manager of Field Operations, you will:
Provide technical support to field staff.
Assess training needs and recommend development opportunities.
Advise on the best production technologies and equipment.
Help develop departmental workflows, procedures, and best practices.
Because this role supports both CBC and Radio-Canada, complete fluency in both English and French is required to collaborate effectively with employees across both organizations.
You will also:
Coordinate technical resources with editorial teams and managers during major events and breaking news.
Recommend cost-effective technical solutions for field production.
Implement reliable production systems that support operational needs.
Work unscheduled overtime when operational requirements demand.
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with:
University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
3+ years of experience in a similar leadership role.
Strong interest in technology and innovation.
Extensive knowledge of media operations and field production.
In-depth expertise in camera operation, lighting, and audio.
Experience with file-based production workflows and field transmission.
Strong understanding of video transmission technologies.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
Passion for emerging production technologies.
Genuine interest in News and Current Affairs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Technical writing experience, including reports and briefing notes.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing diverse creative teams.
Experience participating in recruitment and hiring.
Experience managing employee schedules.
Vendor management and purchasing experience.
Thorough understanding of television and radio production systems.
Experience implementing new technologies and coordinating system upgrades.
Experience supporting digital and conventional broadcast platforms.
Ability to present technical recommendations as clear business cases.
Experience preparing management updates and progress reports.
Strong attention to detail.
Fluency in spoken and written French (mandatory).
Key Responsibilities
Oversee field support expenditures.
Facilitate Ordinary Capital Requests (OCR).
Manage technical equipment using the RentalWorks platform.
Purchase equipment through the E-Plaza procurement system.
Coordinate technical resources for departmental and production projects.
Lead and coordinate technical training for staff.
Conduct employee performance and development discussions.
Monitor CBC productions to ensure high technical quality and follow up on technical issues.
Research emerging technologies and recommend new production tools and workflows.
Ensure all technical equipment is properly maintained, organized, and operational.
