Role Description
KLS Engineering is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Drafting & Design Technologist to join our team. This position is responsible for preparing architectural, structural, and site plan drawing packages for a variety of residential, commercial, and agricultural projects. Working under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, the successful candidate will be involved in all phases of a project, from initial site review and design development through permitting, construction, and project completion.
This role combines technical drafting and design with project coordination, regulatory review, client communication, and construction support, offering the opportunity to manage assigned projects from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare complete architectural, structural, and site plan drawing packages from concept through construction documentation.
- Develop structural details and construction drawings for a variety of building and site-related projects.
- Complete engineering calculations under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.
- Ensure drawings and designs comply with applicable legislation, codes, and standards, including the Ontario Building Code (OBC 2024 Parts 2, 3, 4, 9, and other applicable Parts), referenced standards, municipal by-laws, and other regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) regulations and professional practice requirements.
- Review and incorporate applicable municipal zoning by-laws, conservation authority regulations, site constraints, and agency requirements into project designs.
- Coordinate with municipalities, conservation authorities, utility companies, and other regulatory agencies to determine project requirements and obtain necessary approvals.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned projects, maintaining regular communication with clients throughout the design and construction process.
- Conduct site visits to obtain measurements, document existing conditions, and collect information required for project design.
- Perform field reviews and construction inspections to verify work is completed in general conformance with the design intent and issued drawings.
- Coordinate assigned projects from initiation through completion, including scheduling work, tracking project progress, and meeting project deadlines.
- Collaborate with Professional Engineers and other team members to develop practical, efficient, and code-compliant design solutions.
- Maintain organized and accurate project documentation, records, and correspondence throughout all phases of the project.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma in Civil/Construction Engineering Technology (preferred) or Architectural Technology
- Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with Revit is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of building construction practices and structural drafting principles.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, municipal zoning by-laws, conservation authority regulations, and the building permit process.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
