About Us

The Clinical Skills Learning Program (CSLP) is an educational department at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. The CSLP team works with faculty to design, coordinate and deliver curricular events that engage simulation, typically with Simulated Patients (SPs), as the primary means of fulfilling event learning objectives. An SP is a person who has been carefully coached and trained to portray, in a consistent and believable manner, the historical, physical, and emotional features of a person other than themselves for the purpose of the simulation event. Common subject areas for teaching, learning, and assessment with SPs include taking a health history, physical examination, management, counseling, communication, professionalism, ethics, and challenging interactions. While CSLP's primary learners are the Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical and dental students at Schulich, the program also works with other educational faculties at Western and various external clients to integrate experiential simulation sessions into their curriculum.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of the Clinical Skills Learning Program, the Program Coordinator (Simulated Patient Educator) collaborates with course chairs, faculty, and staffs to design, coordinate, and administer simulation events, typically involving Simulated Patients (SPs), for curricular courses/programs that include Schulich Undergraduate and Postgraduate medicine, affiliated collages (Kings, Brescia, Huron), Western Faculty of Health Sciences (Nursing programs), Western Housing, CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics) centre, and Fanshawe College, among others. The role will also function as an SP trainer and site administrator for large scale Objective Structured Clinical Examination events for Schulich Undergrad and Postgrad, Medical Council of Canada, Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada, and Neonatal-Perinatal Fellows. The role will be involved in the planning and administration of all educational and evaluations programs that are the responsibility of the Clinical Skills Learning Program.

Qualifications

Education:

4 year University Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline required

Experience:

4 years of experience working in Adult Education required; teaching experience preferred
Experience working in an Experiential Learning environment; preferably with Simulated Patients
Experience in giving directed, communication skills feedback required
Experience with large project management and providing administrative support independently and proactively required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Verbal and written communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
Well-developed presentation and public speaking skills with the ability to plan and manage sessions/workshops of various sizes; familiarity with large scale events an asset
Interpersonal skills with the ability to coach large and small groups of adult learners as well as support internal/external clients
Ability to synthesize information to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation and reports
Ability to apply active listening to hear and understand the complete message being communicated
Competency to maintain confidentiality and treat sensitive information with discretion
Ability to establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity to cross-cultural differences and norms
Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
Ability to process information with a high degree of accuracy, and follow formal business practices with high attention to detail
Ability to multi-task and maintain and organized and effective personal work environment
Ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate University guidelines, policies and practices to key stakeholders
Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, faculty members, students and the public
Ability to make appropriate decisions and resolve issues by identifying the critical elements of a problem situation and considering each aspect
Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
Intermediate proficiency required in Microsoft Office in order to prepare emails, reports and documents, and to input data into spreadsheets and databases with the ability to learn new software
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and follow through on work assignments
Demonstrated flexibility with the ability to work evenings and weekends as required
