The Custodian plays a vital role in supporting the life of the parish by ensuring the church property and facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition that enables worship, rental use, community activities, and parish ministries to flourish.
Purpose
The Custodian ensures that the church property and its facilities are maintained in a welcoming, clean and safe condition, that property systems and other components are maintained cost-effectively in optimum working order, and that any problems with the property or facilities are promptly reported to the Parish Corporation and/or Property Committee co-chairs.
Key Responsibilities
a. Rentals
- Calculate rates based on details provided.
- Rental fulfillment
- Meet renters in advance of events to show them the room, the tables and chairs; discuss layout of furniture, provide cleaning instructions, explain waste disposal system, answer other logistical questions.
- Serve as contact person the renter can call in case of any problems or an emergency.
b. Cleaning
- Ongoing cleaning, as needed : e.g. sweep/vacuum/mop; wash windows.
- Clean after external (paid) rentals, as required: this may take place beyond regularly scheduled hours.
- Order and/or pick up cleaning, waste disposal and paper supplies as required.
c. Waste management
- Collect and separate garbage and recycling from washrooms, hall and kitchen.
- Deliver garbage and recycling waste to the curb on Sunday evenings.
- Retrieve from curb, clean and, if necessary, wash all garbage and recycling containers and return them to their spots.
d. Lock-up
- Lockup: Sunday and Monday, as well as any evening when the custodian’s presence is required for rentals/cleaning support. Custodian will be the backup person for the lockup contractor, as required.
- Advise the Wardens, Incumbent and Parish Administrator as soon as possible of any serious matters and provide advice for resolution, if applicable.
e. Room Preparation
- Prepare rooms (arranging chairs, tables etc.) for committees, group meetings and other Church gatherings, as required.
- Check all areas after use and returning space to the normal set-up.
f. Inspections
- Monitor compliance with fire regulations by: conducting regular inspections of the premises for potential fire hazards; testing emergency lighting; ensuring clear access to all stairways, exits and fire extinguishers.
- Inspect and test all smoke alarms and replace batteries.
- Inspect all fire extinguishers and initial their tags.
g. Minor maintenance & repairs
- Undertake minor maintenance and repairs as they occur.
- Perform planned minor maintenance and cosmetic repairs.
- Maintain a running record of all repairs undertaken.
Reporting & Communications
- Reports to the Parish’s Corporation.
- Ongoing coordination with Parish Administrator and Property Committee co-chairs.
- Participates in Property Committee meetings.
- Liaises with campus partners, as required.
Requirements
- Knowledge of and skill in cleaning procedures and processes, products and equipment.
- Knowledge of basic building maintenance processes or procedures.
- Ability to work independently and be proactive with moderate supervision.
- Physically fit and able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs, work from a tall ladder, kneel, squat and stand to perform duties.
- Familiarity with correct use of protective equipment.
- Satisfy St Thomas the Apostle’s requirements for a clear Police Records Check
