Nature of the Position
The District of Sechelt is seeking a dedicated Gardener to help keep our parks, streetscapes, and community spaces healthy, safe, and thriving. If you enjoy working outdoors in all seasons and take pride in making a visible, positive difference in your community, we invite you to apply.
Reporting to the Manager of Community Services and working under the direction of the Parks Foreman, the Parks Gardener plans and organizes grounds maintenance projects for District parks, streetscapes, and green spaces. The role includes directing labourers in grounds maintenance activities and performing a range of maintenance, arboriculture, and landscaping duties.
Required Competencies
Qualified applicants must:
- Have Grade 12 completion (or equivalent)
- Hold a one year certificate in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Have a minimum of three (3) years of related experience in gardening, landscaping, or similar work
- Hold a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract
Applicants must also demonstrate:
- A professional, positive, and responsive work attitude
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- The ability to interact professionally and courteously with the public
- The ability to safely and competently operate a variety of garden and power tools, tractors, mowers, watering equipment, and vehicles up to one (1) ton
- Physical capacity to exert, sustain, and repeat the physical and mental effort required to complete assignments in all types of weather
Preferred Competencies
Horticulture and arboriculture knowledge and experience is preferred. Experience working in a municipal government environment would be considered an asset.
Working Conditions
This is a permanent, full-time, unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 7, ranging from $34.50 – $38.34 per hour plus a competitive extended benefits package and three weeks’ vacation to start. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with participation in a nine-day fortnight shift schedule available. The District supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Code of B.C.
