Duties
As part of the agricultural automation research team, the successful candidate will conduct experiments supporting research and development in robotics and automation for livestock and crop production systems. The work aims to improve production efficiency, reduce labour and time requirements, and enhance animal and worker safety.
Responsibilities will include:
- Assemble, install, program, control, and maintain robotic and automated systems used in agricultural environments.
- Integrate sensors with robotic systems and troubleshoot the resulting hardware and software interfaces.
- Configure, integrate, deploy, and test vision-guided robotic systems.
- Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, presentations, and publications.
- Order supplies and equipment and maintain laboratory and field equipment.
- Participate in multidisciplinary research projects and assist in prototype fabrication and system validation.
- Support field trials in barns, research farms, greenhouses and processing facilities.
Intent of the process
The immediate need is to staff one full-time indeterminate position in Lethbridge, Alberta.
A written exam may be administered; an interview may be conducted for successful candidates and references will be validated.

Conditions of Employment:
Ability and willingness to work overtime as required.

Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 22 kg).

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in electrical, electronics, mechatronics, automation, instrumentation, computer engineering technology, robotics, or another field relevant to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of training, education, and experience.

Experience:
Experience assembling, programming, operating, and troubleshooting electronic, robotic, or automated equipment.
Experience using Python for artificial intelligence and/or computer vision applications.
Experience using C/C++ or any other programming language suitable for automation or control applications.
Experience operating or maintaining equipment or technology used in laboratory, field, livestock, or agricultural research environments.
Experience reading and interpreting technical documentation, such as wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, assembly drawings, or system specifications.
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge:
Knowledge of basic electronics and embedded systems.
Knowledge of computer programming (Python, C/C++, or similar).
Knowledge of robotic system components such as actuators, sensors, controllers and safety procedures.

Experience:
Experience with 3D printing or mechanical fabrication.
Experience with industrial and mobile robots.
Experience troubleshooting IoT sensor systems.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of software development practices, including version control (e.g., Git/GitHub), code documentation, testing, and deployment.
Knowledge of the Robot Operating System (ROS/ROS2).
Knowledge of embedded computing platforms, such as NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, or equivalent platforms.
