Job Overview
The Landscaping and Housing Maintenance Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and practical training to participants enrolled in the Landscaping and Housing Maintenance program. The instructor equips learners with the foundational skills, safety knowledge, equipment handling abilities, and workplace practices required for entry-level positions in landscaping, groundskeeping, outdoor care, and property maintenance. This role promotes participant success through effective lesson preparation, hands-on demonstrations, learner evaluation, coaching, and ongoing mentorship.
Key Accountabilities:
- Deliver classroom and hands-on instruction in landscaping, groundskeeping, outdoor care, and property maintenance in alignment with approved curriculum guidelines and learning objectives
- Develop lesson plans, instructional resources, demonstrations, practical activities, and learner evaluation tools
- Provide practical training on the safe and effective use of landscaping tools, outdoor equipment, irrigation systems, lawn maintenance, gardening, planting, pruning, and general property upkeep
- Teach and reinforce workplace safety procedures, hazard recognition, safe equipment handling, and industry-standard best practices
- Track learner progress and provide timely feedback, coaching, and individualized support
- Evaluate participant performance and maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and training activities
- Facilitate experiential learning through practical projects, simulated work environments, and field-based training opportunities
- Foster a safe, respectful, inclusive, and professional learning environment
- Maintain regular communication with WWSTC and program stakeholders regarding participant progress, attendance, and training delivery requirements
- Ensure all training activities comply with organizational policies, workplace safety standards, and industry expectations
Required Qualifications:
- Diploma, certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent training in Landscaping, Horticulture, Grounds Maintenance, Building Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, or a related field
- Minimum 3 years of recent industry experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, property maintenance, facilities maintenance, or outdoor maintenance operations
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining landscaping tools, equipment, and irrigation systems
- Knowledge of workplace safety requirements, hazard identification, and safe work practices
- Experience delivering training, mentoring, supervising staff, or facilitating adult learning is considered an asset
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist or equivalent trade certification
- Occupational First Aid or Standard First Aid certification
- WHMIS certification
- Chainsaw Safety Training certification
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, employment programs, or workforce development initiatives
