Job Summary
To provide technical support in the teaching laboratories for the Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological (CAPS) undergraduate program, including but not limited to CAPS 303 and CAPS 431; maintain and prepare lab spaces, equipment and chemical materials.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the CAPS Program Directors and will take direction from the course instructor(s) for CAPS courses, including but not limited to the instructors of CAPS 303 and CAPS 431. Administrative matters including space allocation, access, funding, and other program and HR resources, are coordinated through and reported to the Director of Administration.
The work will be performed in a wet lab setting and will support students working in this setting.
Work Performed

Technical support for CAPS 303, CAPS 431 laboratory courses and other CAPS courses, as required.

Maintain research equipment in the lab; ensure it is kept is good condition and stored safely

Prior to each lab session: prepare the lab stations with equipment, solutions and materials; attend run-through sessions with course teaching assistants (TA's).

Prepare laboratory materials, media, reagents, stains, buffers etc. and for the academic sessions and the specific teaching labs within.

Dispense and aliquot reagents and supplies.

Set up electrophysiological recording and/or other equipment for each lab

Attend labs: make sure materials are refreshed as needed; carry out equipment troubleshooting; ensure that students are following safety protocols

Clean the lab after each class; clean and prepare all equipment in the teaching labs in preparation for the next session.

Collect used glassware, biohazard wastes from the CAPS teaching lab; sort and load collected glassware in the autoclave for cleaning.

Sterilize, scrub & rinse glassware, load racks for the autoclave and run the autoclave and transfer the completed autoclaved materials to the dryer.

Inventory and order chemical supplies, consumables and other lab acquisitions.

Pick up any biohazards; load & autoclave biohazards for decontamination.

Prepare master binder/digital notebook of lab course excercises, including all necessary required pre-lab prep and materials for CAPS 303 and 431. Assist in the development of new laboratory excercises.

In summer term, carry out equipment maintenance and initiate upgrades where required; maintain and renew biosafety and chemical safety protocols; Update computer hardware and software, and liase with AD Instruments

Perform other related duties as needed.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment or poor decisions could have extensive effects, including the loss of laboratory time, loss of teaching time and, damage to laboratory equipment. Moreover, improper handling of equipment or materials could represent a safety hazard to students or others.
Supervision Received
Employee receives detailed work direction from CAPS program directors and course instructor(s) on new processes or course experiments but otherwise works under general supervision in carrying out routine activities.
Supervision Given
Provides technical assistance and support to TA's, when needed, and to students in CAPS laboratory courses and laboratory teaching settings.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
BSc (preferred), in physiology, cell biology and/or a related life science field.
Experience in a laboratory setting. Chemical & biohazard safety procedure knowledge as well as first aid training also preferred
Proven ability to learn new techniques and demonstrate good practical laboratory skills. Position requires effective oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently. Able to exercise good judgment. Accuracy, care and attention to detail.
