Position Summary
ProtechGeo Surveying Ltd. is a new startup based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Our Survey team has decades of combined experience and expertise serving clients throughout Alberta.
We are seeking a motivated Survey Drafter responsible for preparing survey plans and documents that support land development and infrastructure projects in Alberta. Working closely with an Alberta Land Surveyor, you will ensure that plans align with the requests of various municipalities, government entities, engineering firms, contractors and landowners while adhering to the rigorous standards of regulatory agencies, including the Alberta Land Surveyors Association, Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Alberta Land Titles system.
What You'll Actually Do
- Draft survey plans, Real Property Reports (RPRs), subdivision plans, reference plans, and other legal survey documents; the paperwork that legally defines property lines, easements, and land use across Alberta.
- Take raw field survey data collected by crews and transform it into clean, accurate, submission-ready deliverables.
- Build and refine plans in AutoCAD, while sharpening templates that get more precise with every project.
- Dig into land titles, historical survey plans, easements, rights-of-way, and legal descriptions, becoming a bit of a land-records detective along the way.
- Make sure every drawing complies with Alberta Land Surveyors' Association standards, municipal requirements, and provincial legislation, so nothing gets kicked back at approval.
- Crunch the numbers: coordinates, areas, bearings, and distances, calculated with precision every time.
- Keep project records, drawing files, and survey databases organized, current, and audit-ready.
- Partner with surveyors on plan revisions, submissions, and quality control reviews, sharpening your judgment alongside theirs.
- Be the connective tissue between survey crews, project managers, engineers, and clients; spotting and solving drafting issues before they become project delays.
- Give every finished plan one last, sharp-eyed review for accuracy, completeness, and consistency before it goes out the door.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Geomatics, Survey Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field; your formal foundation in the discipline.
- Hands-on experience with survey drafting and CAD software (AutoCAD experience is a strong asset).
- Working knowledge of survey principles, coordinate systems, and legal survey processes.
- A solid grasp of Alberta Land Survey regulations and standards, or a genuine eagerness to master them.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Sharp attention to detail and strong organizational instincts, the kind that catches a half-degree error before it becomes a legal headache.
Key Competencies
- Technical drafting expertise - you can turn field notes into flawless, professional-grade plans.
- Spatial awareness - you can visualize how lines, boundaries, and structures relate in real-world space.
- Mathematical and analytical skills - comfortable working with coordinates, bearings, and geometry.
- Quality control and accuracy - you catch what others miss.
- Time management and prioritization - juggling multiple projects and deadlines without dropping a stitch.
- Communication and teamwork - clear, confident back-and-forth with crews, engineers, and clients.
- Problem-solving abilities - when the data doesn't quite add up, you dig until it does.
Where This Role Can Take You
This is more than a drafting job - it's a launchpad. Working directly under a licensed Alberta Land Surveyor gives you exposure to the full lifecycle of a survey project, from field data to final registration. Many Survey Drafters use this experience as a stepping stone toward articling and licensure as an Alberta Land Surveyor, or to specialize further in geomatics, GIS, or survey project management.
