Position Overview
We are seeking a highly detail-oriented 3D CAD Designer Intern to support our aluminum and stainless steel manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for developing accurate layouts and production-ready models based on customer specifications for fabricated metal components, assemblies, and custom projects.
The ideal candidate understands manufacturing processes, sheet metal design, tolerances, and the practical considerations required for fabrication and production. Strong understanding of math and geometry skills will be an asset for this position.
Key Responsibilities
1. Customer Layout & Design Development
- Develop precise 2D and 3D layouts based on customer drawings, sketches, and specifications
- Translate customer requirements into manufacturable designs for aluminum and stainless steel products
- Modify and optimize layouts to ensure structural integrity and fabrication efficiency
- Revise designs based on production feedback or customer changes
2. 3D Modeling & Technical Documentation
- Create parametric 3D models and assemblies using industry-standard CAD software
- Produce detailed fabrication drawings including dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications
- Generate flat patterns for sheet metal components when applicable
- Prepare production files for CNC machining, laser cutting, or bending
- Maintain organized file management and version control
3. Manufacturing & Production Support
- Collaborate with fabrication and machining teams to ensure design feasibility
- Apply knowledge of aluminum and stainless steel material properties, including thickness, bend allowances, and weld considerations
- Identify potential production challenges and adjust designs accordingly
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by refining design efficiency and reducing material waste
Qualifications
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Experience developing layouts based on customer-provided specifications
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary
Preferred Qualifications (Assets)
- Experience with Autodesk Fusion 360
- Knowledge of tolerances, dimensioning standards, and material behavior
- Experience in aluminum and/or stainless steel manufacturing
- Strong understanding of sheet metal design and fabrication processes
- Familiarity with CNC machining, laser cutting, and brake press operations processes
- Understanding of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles
