Position Summary
Reporting to the Transition House Manager for all program-related and employment matters and to the Community Program Director for strategic directions, the Support Worker will provide support to women, Two Spirit, gender-diverse, non-binary, trans people, and children/youth accessing the Squamish Drop-in Centre and Transition House (with or without children, either fleeing domestic violence or at increased risk of violence). This is done in accordance with the agency's policies and procedures, consisting of (but not limited to) emotional support, safety planning, education, advocacy, future direction planning, referral assistance and household duties, screening and orientation from an intersectional feminist perspective using a non-judgmental approach.
Other tasks required are fostering community relations, support and education within the community, and ensuring PearlSpace’s service goals and mission are met. To support and uphold the values implied by the PearlSpace Mission Statement.
Skills and Attributes
· Two years experience in social/human services or a related discipline
· Knowledge of current federal, provincial and municipal government policy affecting clients.
· An in-depth understanding of systemic discrimination facing women and gender-diverse individuals, and the dynamics of violence against women and gender-diverse individuals.
· Current Basic First Aid Certification (OFA Level 1 or equivalent) an asset
· Reliable vehicle and a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
· Training and experience in the field of crisis counselling for people in abusive relationships.
· Four years of recent experience in social services, specifically working with women, Two Spirit, gender-diverse, non-binary, trans people and children/youth fleeing abuse.
· Demonstrate an understanding and experience supporting clients affected by mental ill-health, substance-use, poverty, and discrimination based on ethnicity, class, sexual orientation and other intersections of marginalization.
· Demonstrate an understanding of and experience in supporting clients affected by the following forms of violence; domestic, family, societal and systemic abuse as it affects women and gender-diverse individuals.
· Strong communication skills; both written and verbal.
· Strong organizational skills: time management, attention to detail, capacity to prioritize by assessing the situation to determine urgency.
· Positive stress management skills.
· Positive independent and collaborative problem solving and conflict management skills.
· Strong personal interaction skills; listening, crisis management.
· Proven advocacy skills.
