Purpose:
We are currently recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer. Our team includes world class experts and dynamic go-getters. This is a full-time position based in Kitimat, British Columbia.
Worley is supporting Rio Tinto Kitimat Sustaining Capital Program as a multidiscipline team undertaking engineering design services. The work comprises engineering support for sustaining capital projects and operational projects on a brownfield site.
We are looking for a motivated individual that wants to grow in their professional career. You will be supporting a site-based project team at Rio Tinto Kitimat aluminium smelter operations.
This role is based at the Kitimat Smelter and requires the candidate to be based in Kitimat or Terrace.
You will be supported by Worley Site Team and experienced engineers and designers located at head office in Vancouver and to ensure that you have the support to complement your current experience.
Responsibilities:
As an Electrical Engineer with Worley , you will work closely with our existing Capital team to deliver projects for our clients while continuing to develop your skills and experience. Your responsibilities will include:
- Deliver discipline specific engineering services that meet Worley, the client’s and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Undertake site activities such as surveys, as-build verifications, engineering support to ongoing construction/commissioning activities;
- Undertake engineering design and technical verification of discipline project deliverables by others (within your technical capability).
- Ensure a ‘fit for purpose’ solution from concept through to as built is developed considering safe and sustainable design, constructability, commissioning phases, operability, maintainability and decommissioning.
- Communicate effectively and regularly with the Customer site based stakeholders, SMEs and head office project team.
- Establish and maintain relationships with site contractors, Customer and other Worley personnel.
- Proactively seek an understanding of the safety hazards and risks associated with the asset lifecycle of the designed product, plant or structure; be responsible for action and close out where relevant.
- Identify issues and problems; develop appropriate and innovative solutions; and ask for assistance if required.
- Perform and/or manage discipline specific engineering services such as:
- Ensure the project scope is clear and that changes to scope comply with project change management processes.
- Prepare/assist or oversee the production of engineering calculations, drawings and documentation.
- Ensure all deliverables are checked in accordance with Worley checking procedures.
- Participate in project reviews, HAZIDs/HAZOPs and safety in design workshops as required.
- Prepare engineering estimates for the electrical discipline in response to requests for quotation including:
- Scoping engineering requirements.
- Detail methodologies and/or engineering tasks in scope and those out of scope.
- Clarify and detail assumptions, exclusions, relied upon information and the deliverables list.
- Input into the schedule incorporating a realistic delivery sequence for the discipline with consideration to project milestones; input from other disciplines and receival of relied upon information.
- Ascertaining resources required based on availability.
What you will bring:
Technical and Industry Experience:
To be considered for this role it is envisaged you will possess the following experiential attributes:
- Minimum 10 years technical experience in the Refinery/Smelter/Mining or similar industry; including experience leading projects on a discipline level.
- Extensive experience (>6 years recent) in brownfield electrical systems modification detailed design and knowledge of instrumentation and control system interfaces.
- Must have ability to work across multiple projects.
- Experience across all phases of engineering projects.
- Excellent understanding of Australian electrical standards.
- Hazardous Area Accreditation (desirable) and/or Functional Safety TUV Certification (beneficial).
- Good understanding and proven experience in:
- Equipment sizing, cable routing, equipment layouts, lighting design, earthing design, arc flash requirements and HV switchgear and MCC design.
- Control system interfacing and instrumentation.
- Electrical calculations required for design.
- Protection systems and relay settings (overcurrent, earth fault, motors, VSDs).
- Creation of design drawings such as SLDs, schematics, terminations, schedules, layouts.
- Site experience such as scoping solutions, equipment inspections, construction and commissioning.
- Witnessing and inspection of equipment during FATs, SATs.
- Fieldbus and Industrial Communication Network Layouts.
- Preparing ITPs, MTOs, datasheets, specifications, construction methodologies, philosophy documents, procurement requisitions and construction scope of works packages.
- Input into electrical estimates and execution schedules.
- Understanding of shutdown planning and considerations for design.

To be considered for this role it is envisaged you will possess the following behavioral attributes:
- Strong technical experience, practical and leadership experience in the relevant discipline in the same or similar industry, including experience managing and leading brownfield projects and teams.
- Highly effective organisational skills is a must including the ability to plan, set goals, prioritise, set accountabilities, manage schedule and budget.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills is a must including the ability to convey information and ideas to individuals and groups and effective technical document writing and grammar skills.
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:
Required:
- Tertiary qualifications with a 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering majoring in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years technical experience in the Refinery/Smelter/Mining or similar industry; including experience leading projects on a discipline level.
- P. Eng (BC) designation preferred.
- Extensive experience (>6 years recent) in brownfield electrical systems modification detailed design and knowledge of instrumentation and control system interfaces.
- Familiarity with CSA, IEC, and mining industry standards applicable electrical systems.
For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $122,176 to $169,718
