Job Overview
-
Provide technical evaluations and advice, solve problems and coordinate technical work as required, in a number of major work areas, in support of the commissioning, operation and maintenance of the facilities.

Receive assignments from Supervisor as well as identify potential problems and opportunities in assigned areas and/or systems in the facility.

Assess, evaluate and recommend initial disposition of the problems as requiring

abandonment of the problem as being the best alternative.

Receive assignments from the Supervisor or identify opportunities for improvement in equipment, systems, processes, procedures, or operations.

Assess issues, develop proposed solutions, and consult with section heads, shift supervisors, technical specialists, operating personnel, contractors, suppliers, and external organizations as required to evaluate and refine recommendations.

Prepare business cases, cost justifications, financial evaluations, and implementation plans; recommend adoption of proposals and submit documentation for review, approval, and funding authorization as required.

Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, including equipment specifications, engineering calculations, installation instructions, testing plans, operating procedures, maintenance procedures, and related records.

Coordinate submission of technical documentation to internal and external approval authorities, regulatory agencies, government departments, and industry organizations, as required.

Support the installation, implementation, commissioning, and testing of approved modifications or initiatives and ensure work is completed in accordance with approved designs and intended objectives.

Provide technical guidance and instruction to staff through classroom training, field training, operating procedures, presentations, and other knowledge-transfer activities.

Monitor equipment performance, maintenance issues, operating problems, and industry developments; recommend and implement improvements to enhance safety, reliability, efficiency, and performance.

Develop, revise, maintain, and update operating and departmental procedures to ensure compliance with operating licences, policies, standards, safety requirements, and department practices.

Consult with operating personnel and other stakeholders to ensure procedures accurately reflect current practices and operational requirements.

Conduct studies, investigations, and analyses of operational data, equipment performance, events, and trends to identify opportunities for improvement and support decision-making.

Collect, compile, analyze, and interpret technical and operational data; prepare reports, recommendations, and supporting documentation for management, regulatory, historical, and operational purposes.

Prepare and deliver reports and presentations that communicate technical details, results, conclusions, recommendations, and stakeholder contributions to internal and external audiences.

Respond to inquiries from report recipients, management, regulators, and other stakeholders by providing technical explanations and supporting information.

Review proposals from internal and external sources, recommend revisions where appropriate, and provide written recommendations to the Supervisor for consideration and approval.

Prepare or assist in the preparation of technical specifications and purchasing requisitions for materials, equipment, services, and contracts.

Provide technical support during procurement, installation, commissioning, and field implementation activities, including recommendations for spare parts and equipment support requirements.

Recommend, support, and coordinate research and development initiatives aimed at improving equipment, system reliability, operational performance, material performance, process control, and related areas.

Gather, compile, and analyze information to support departmental budget preparation, monitor budget variances, and provide input for management reporting.

Periodically supervise staff engaged in these activities by assigning work, reviewing results, providing technical direction, and ensuring work is completed in accordance with established requirements.
Qualifications

Requires a strong command of English to prepare and present clear, concise, and effective technical reports, recommendations, and communications, both verbally and in writing.

Requires completion of a four-year university degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires training and experience in the design, development, operation, maintenance, or commissioning of nuclear facilities, nuclear materials or components, or complex industrial systems and equipment.

Requires the ability to analyze and solve technical problems; provide expert advice and guidance; conduct studies and evaluations; and make recommendations related to the design, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and performance of facilities, systems, equipment, materials, and components.

Requires experience conducting technical, operational, and economic evaluations to support engineering, operational, and business decisions.

Requires sufficient job-related experience to develop a thorough understanding of assigned responsibilities and achieve full competency in the position.

A total of more than 6 years and up to and including 8 years of relevant education, training, and experience is considered necessary to meet the requirements of the role.

Must hold the applicable Design Engineer (DE) qualification (currently Qualification 33685).
