Job Summary
The Night Shift Production Supervisor is responsible for leading shop operations during the night shift, ensuring production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met. This is a hands-on leadership role, where the Supervisor will work primarily as a Laser Operator while overseeing team performance, workflow, scheduling, and production output across fabrication, welding, and assembly operations.
The successful candidate will initially train on the day shift to gain a full understanding of operations before transitioning to independently manage the night shift.
Schedule
- Monday to Thursday: 4:30 PM to 3:00 AM
- 30-minute unpaid lunch break
- Total of 40 hours per week
- Overtime may be required based on production needs.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and lead the night shift production team.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all production activities during the shift.
- Assign work, monitor productivity, and ensure efficient workflow throughout fabrication, welding, assembly, and finishing operations.
- Train, coach, and mentor employees across departments.
- Support onboarding and skills development of new hires.
- Foster a positive, accountable, and team-oriented work environment.
- Address employee concerns and support overall team performance.
Production & Laser Operations
- Perform hands-on work as a Laser Operator while leading the shift.
- Set up, operate, and monitor CNC laser cutting equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, work orders, and nesting programs.
- Verify material requirements and ensure proper machine setup before production runs.
- Inspect parts for quality, dimensional accuracy, and compliance with specifications.
- Troubleshoot minor machine issues and coordinate maintenance requirements as needed.
- Support downstream departments by ensuring laser-cut parts are completed, identified, and staged correctly.
- Assist with other fabrication-related activities as required to support production needs.
Shift Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with the day shift to ensure effective handover of work, priorities, and issues.
- Communicate production status, delays, staffing concerns, and operational challenges to the Operations Manager.
- Ensure jobs are properly staged, labeled, and prepared for subsequent operations.
- Identify and address production bottlenecks and workflow inefficiencies.
- Maintain accurate production records and shift reports.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Enforce quality standards throughout production operations.
- Conduct inspections to ensure adherence to drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
- Investigate defects and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiency.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with company quality systems and ISO standards where applicable.
General Shop Duties
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and material-handling equipment.
- Assist with inventory movement and material staging.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
- Perform basic equipment inspections and preventative maintenance tasks.
Safety
- Ensure all employees follow safety policies and procedures.
- Enforce proper PPE use at all times.
- Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
- Ensure compliance with OHSA requirements and company safety standards.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of manufacturing or metal fabrication experience.
- Minimum 2-3 years of CNC Laser Operator experience preferred.
- Previous leadership, lead hand, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
- Experience with CNC laser cutting equipment and related fabrication processes.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership abilities.
- Knowledge of quality systems and ISO standards is an asset.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical work.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience (or willingness to become certified).
Additional Notes
This position will begin with a structured onboarding and training period on the day shift to ensure a full understanding of company processes, products, and production workflows.
The successful candidate will transition to the night shift once fully trained and confident in independently leading operations.
Must be available to work the permanent night shift schedule (Monday–Thursday, 4:30 PM – 3:00 AM) following completion of training.
This is a working supervisory role, requiring the individual to remain actively involved in daily production while operating laser equipment and leading the team.
The role is critical to supporting the company's continued growth and multi-shift operations, with a focus on maintaining productivity, quality, accountability, and communication between shifts. Shift premiums are available.
Work Environment
- Industrial manufacturing environment with moderate to high noise levels.
- Exposure to moving machinery, sharp metal edges, sparks, dust, and metal debris.
- Standing, bending, walking, and lifting required throughout the shift.
