Overview
The On-Site Ambassador will play a key role in supporting the Valley Zoo Development Society’s (VZDS) fundraising initiatives by engaging visitors, promoting awareness of major zoo projects, and collecting valuable visitor feedback and demographic information.
This public-facing position will serve as a representative of the VZDS and will become an expert on current and upcoming capital projects and upcoming projects.
Funded by the Government of Canada's Canada Summer Jobs program.
Key Responsibilities
Project Awareness & Public Engagement
- Develop a thorough understanding of current and future VZDS and EVZ capital projects and fundraising priorities.
- Engage visitors in friendly, informative conversations about zoo improvements and conservation initiatives.
- Clearly communicate project goals, timelines, benefits, and community impact.
- Answer visitor questions regarding fundraising campaigns and capital projects.
- Serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for the VZDS and its mission.
Fundraising Support
- Promote capital campaign donations.
- Explain the impact of donor support and how contributions help advance zoo improvements.
- Encourage visitor participation through direct asks, special campaigns, and onsite fundraising opportunities.
- Support fundraising events, donor engagement activities, and campaign activations throughout the zoo.
- Track and report engagement and fundraising activities as required.
Visitor Research & Data Collection
- Conduct visitor surveys to gather feedback on guest experiences.
- Collect demographic, geographic, and visitor behavior information in accordance with organizational guidelines and privacy requirements.
- Accurately record survey responses and engagement data using approved tools and systems.
- Identify visitor trends and share observations that may support fundraising, marketing, and grant reporting efforts.
- Help ensure data collection targets are achieved throughout the season.
Event & Campaign Support
- Assist with onsite events.
- Help set up, maintain, and organize information displays and campaign materials.
- Support special initiatives led by the VZDS team.
- Collaborate with zoo staff and volunteers to ensure a positive and coordinated visitor experience.
Qualifications
Required
- Available to work 7 hour days Wednesday through Sunday as well as holidays, and special events as required.
- Comfortable initiating conversations with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
- Enthusiastic, outgoing, and confident in public-facing environments.
- Ability to learn and communicate detailed project information effectively.
- Comfortable asking for donations and discussing charitable giving.
- Ability to work independently, outdoors for extended periods, and in varying weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience in fundraising, customer service, public engagement, education, tourism, hospitality, or sales.
- Experience conducting surveys, collecting data, or engaging in market research.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and digital data collection tools.

- Knowledge of conservation, zoological organizations, or charitable fundraising is an asset.
To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs, you must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years old;
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or someone who has been officially granted refugee protection in Canada;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Social Insurance Number.
