PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The Senior SEM Inspector supports the SEM tunnel supervision team by inspecting, documenting and reporting on construction activities. The role is essential in verifying design assumptions, and contributing to the safe and efficient application of the observational method in SEM tunnelling. The Senior SEM Inspector maintains a continuous site presence at the tunnel heading, monitoring excavation and support works to ensure compliance with design and safety requirements. This includes inspecting excavation sequences, installed support measures, material quality and workmanship, as well as observing ground conditions encountered during construction.
Working across day and night shifts as required, the role involves producing accurate daily reports, recording construction progress and site conditions, and communicating key observations to the SEM supervision team. The Senior SEM Inspector also monitors site performance and provides practical recommendations to improve productivity, safety and quality.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Monitor excavation and support activities at the tunnel heading to ensure compliance with design and specifications.
- Inspect support installation, material quality and workmanship.
- Observe and record ground conditions and construction progress.
- Produce clear and accurate daily reports using digital tools.
- Capture and manage photographic records of key construction activities.
- Communicate observations and recommendations to the SEM supervision team and site staff.
- Identify opportunities to improve construction performance, safety and quality.
- Support the Required Excavation and Support (RES) process and participate in RES meetings.
SKILLS & EXPERTISE REQUIRED:
- *Minimum of 10 years of tunnelling site inspection experience.
- Advanced knowledge of SEM/NATM tunnelling practices, with extensive experience across complex construction environments, including urban soft ground conditions, multiple drift and face subdivision techniques, mixed ground conditions, pre-support installation, tunnel junctions and breakouts, and implementation of the RES process.
- Strong practical understanding of tunnelling construction processes and equipment, including sprayed concrete application, excavation and mucking operations, and drilling and installation of pre-support systems.
- Proven ability to inspect works in detail and ensure high standards of quality, including strict adherence to RES procedures and design requirements.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly report observations and collaborate effectively with site teams.
- Competent use of digital tools and handheld devices for reporting, photographic records, and document management within a project environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating a collaborative approach and strong attention to detail.
- Relevant vocational qualification in construction, such as a foreman’s certificate or equivalent.
- The legal right to work in Canada is essential.
