Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Maintenance Supervisor who will oversee, assign, and prioritize maintenance and repair operations across our residential properties in the Burnaby area. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this role provides direct leadership to the maintenance technician team, ensuring high standards of service, safety, responsiveness, and quality control.
This is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate will actively lead maintenance work, support technicians in completing daily tasks, visit multiple residential properties regularly, and ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard. This role is ideal for a knowledgeable, well-rounded maintenance professional who enjoys leading from the front, solving problems, and ensuring buildings operate smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Facilities Manager to develop and implement department goals and operational plans aligned with New Vista Society’s strategic priorities.
- Uphold and model New Vista’s core values while fostering accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the maintenance team.
- Assign, schedule, and prioritize work orders daily, ensuring timely completion based on urgency, safety, and operational impact.
- Actively leading maintenance operations, working alongside staff to complete repairs and maintenance tasks while providing real-time guidance and oversight.
- Support maintenance staff in daily duties, troubleshooting complex issues and stepping in when additional hands-on support is required.
- Identify and initiate work orders as needed during site inspections to support proactive maintenance practices. Assist in identifying deficiencies and noting repair requirements due to gaps and ensuring timely and consistent maintenance standards across all properties.
- Ensure work orders are completed efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of quality, addressing deficiencies promptly.
- Meet with contractors as required to support project coordination. Responsibilities may include participating in discussions regarding scope of work, services and supplies, as well as assisting with inspections to assess workmanship and materials, under the direction of the Maintenance/Facilities lead.
- Monitor staff and contractor performance; support coaching, performance discussions, and corrective action planning when needed while providing technical expertise, mentorship and skill development support to maintenance staff and trades.
- Oversee routine and non-routine maintenance of building systems, including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, elevators, fire safety systems, waste management, and grounds.
- Communicate professionally and positively with tenants, Property Managers, and internal teams to ensure strong service delivery and responsiveness.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency, reduce recurring deficiencies, and enhance preventative maintenance practices.
- Manage maintenance software to ensure accurate assignment, tracking, and timely completion of work orders.
- Travel between properties to maintain direct operational oversight and quality assurance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership skills with a hands-on, team-oriented approach.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid understanding of building systems, preventative maintenance practices, and residential housing operations.
- Strong organizational and planning skills including the ability to effectively manage time, responsibilities, and multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities in active work environments.
- Competency in operating maintenance equipment and related software applications.
- Broad skill set in property maintenance, including carpentry, drywall, painting, and general repairs.
- Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, basic electrical work, and appliance repair.
- Experience assigning and coordinating work orders in a multi-site environment.
- Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn new software tools.
- Supervisory or team lead experience considered an asset.
- Physical capability to perform the full scope of maintenance duties.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate level training in an engineering/technical field
- 2-3 years of recent experience in residential or commercial construction or maintenance
