Caframo is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this role is responsible for leading sustaining engineering activities across Caframo's Consumer Products and Lab Solutions product lines, ensuring products continue to meet performance, quality, regulatory, and manufacturing requirements throughout their lifecycle. This role also supports the design and development of new products, working within a cross-functional team to design, prototype, analyze, and test electro-mechanical systems from concept through production launch.

This position balances sustaining engineering, continuous improvement, and new product development while supporting Caframo's commitment to quality, innovation, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Sustaining Engineering:
- Lead sustaining engineering activities for existing products across Caframo divisions.
- Analyze field returns, warranty data, and production issues; drive root cause investigations and corrective actions.
- Manage component obsolescence, alternative component qualifications, and make-versus-buy evaluations.
- Identify and implement product quality, reliability, and cost-reduction improvements.
- Maintain engineering documentation, including BOMs, drawings, specifications, ECOs, and ECNs.
- Plan and execute validation, verification, and life testing for product changes.
- Support manufacturing through troubleshooting, fixture design, and test method improvements.
- Collaborate with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and partners to resolve technical and production challenges.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable regulatory and certification requirements (CSA/UL, RoHS, REACH, etc.).
- Participate in DFMA, DFMEA, risk assessments, and design reviews.
Design & Development:
- Design plastic and metal components and assemblies for new and existing products.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation using SolidWorks.
- Improve existing designs to enhance manufacturability, reliability, performance, and cost effectiveness.
- Perform tolerance stack-ups and basic thermal and stress analyses.
- Build, test, and evaluate prototypes to verify design requirements and product performance.
- Develop and execute engineering test plans and validation activities.
- Work with vendors and manufacturing partners to define appropriate manufacturing processes and design requirements.
- Participate in FMEA activities and other risk-management processes throughout product development.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to develop and maintain work instructions and production documentation.
General Engineering:
- Prepare and manage engineering change requests and change orders.
- Participate in cross-functional design reviews and project meetings.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support to junior team members.
- Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and execution to meet product development objectives.
- Promote engineering best practices, design standards, and continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering team.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive mechanical design experience in a manufacturing or regulated industry.
- Experience supporting products throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through commercialization and sustainment.
- Experience developing mechanical products within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience supporting production environments and working with suppliers and contract manufacturers.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and 3D CAD design, with the ability to create detailed components, assemblies, and technical drawings.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM/Manage is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, die casting, and 3D printing.
- Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical design solutions.
- Understanding of quality systems, product testing, and regulatory requirements related to mechanical design.
- Excellent verbal, written, and technical communication skills.
- Strong organizational, project management, and time-management abilities.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop team members.
- Commitment to quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to balance technical requirements, business objectives, cost targets, and project timelines.
- Knowledge of product certification standards and regulatory requirements applicable to consumer and industrial products.
