Who you are:
You are a professional engineer with strong expertise in nuclear transportation safety, certification, and regulatory compliance. You demonstrate sound judgment and attention to detail when conducting technical assessments and managing multiple complex files within strict timelines. You are committed to continuous learning and can adapt to evolving regulatory, technical, and operational requirements. You work effectively both independently and collaboratively, providing expert advice, training, and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
What you’ll do:
As a Senior Certification Engineer, you will:
- Conduct engineering safety assessments of certification submissions for transport packages, Class II prescribed equipment, and radiation devices.
- Support compliance inspection activities including transport and radiation device operations, manufacturing, maintenance and servicing arrangements,quality assurance programs.
- Provide technical expertise during transport emergencies and enquiries.
- Provide advice, training, and guidance to CNSC staff, government partners, and stakeholders.
- Lead special projects, support research and international initiatives, prepare Commission documentation/presentations.
- Develop and apply national and international regulations and standards for the safe transport of nuclear substances.
- Act as a designated officer for the purposes of issuing transport licences and certificates for prescribed equipment.
Essential Qualifications:
Education:
- University degree in Engineering with specialization in areas such as structural mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, material science, quality assurance or computer analysis techniques and testing, combined with relevant engineering experience in a related field.
- Provincial designation as a registered Professional Engineer in good standing.
Note: You may still apply for this position if you are in the process of acquiring your Professional Engineering designation. Should a suitable candidate not be found with the required designation, then other candidates who are going through the process may be considered.

Experience:
- Performing mechanical, thermal, and structural design and analysis and/or safety assessments (preferably in the nuclear sector).
- Developing, assisting in or participating in the development of policies, regulatory instruments, standards and guides relating to the packaging and transport of nuclear substances and the certification of prescribed equipment at both the national and international level.
- Providing guidance and advice on the packaging and transport of nuclear substances and the certification of prescribed equipment.
- Leading and participating in cross-functional teams.
Knowledge of:
- Engineering subjects areas: structural mechanics, thermal engineering, material science, quality assurance and computer analysis techniques.
- Nuclear substances, Class II prescribed equipment, radiation devices, radiation protection principles, radiation measurement instrumentation, and emergency response practices.
- Nuclear industry from mining and processing to power generation, radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications, wastes and disposal with an emphasis on certification and transport requirements.
- National and international regulations, and CNSC regulatory frameworks.
- Transportation industry (e.g., carriers, freight forwarders, ports, airports, and highway authorities).
Ability to:
- Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing tailoring messaging to a variety of audiences.
- Provide advice and make recommendations of technical and regulatory positions to clients and/or management.
- Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to perform various duties effectively and efficiently.
- Write technical reports.

Asset Qualification:
- Specialization in one or more of the following areas: structural mechanics, finite element analysis, thermodynamics, heat transfer, criticality, welding, material science, quality assurance.
- Experience with the application of commercial software, such as ANSYS or MicroShield.
- Experience with the design of radiation devices, Class II prescribed equipment or packages used to transport nuclear substances.
Operational Needs:
- All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
- Overtime may be required.
- Occasional travel is required based on operational needs.
