Development Assistant, Unscripted & Documentary
6-Month Contract (July 2026 – December 2026)
Toronto, ON (Hybrid)
We are seeking a highly organized, creative, and motivated Development Assistant to join our Unscripted & Documentary Development team on a six-month contract beginning in July 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in television development and gain hands-on experience creating and pitching premium unscripted content.
About the Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Unscripted & Documentary Development, the Development Assistant will support the development team across a wide range of projects, including documentaries, documentary series, reality formats, lifestyle programming, and factual entertainment.
The strongest candidates will be naturally curious, culturally aware, and constantly discovering new stories. They are the type of person who reads long-form journalism, listens to podcasts, follows emerging trends, and regularly finds themselves saying, "This should be a documentary."
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on potential documentary subjects, talent, experts, intellectual property, and emerging cultural trends
- Identify compelling stories, characters, and television formats suitable for development
- Assist with the preparation of pitch materials, including development decks, one-sheets, treatments, and network presentations
- Monitor industry news, ratings, trades, podcasts, books, articles, and social media for new story opportunities
- Help coordinate outreach to potential contributors, talent, and rights holders
- Maintain development databases, project trackers, and research files
- Assist with scheduling meetings and managing development calendars
- Provide general administrative support to the development team as required
Qualifications
- Previous experience in television, film, digital media, journalism, publishing, or a related field is considered an asset
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Strong research abilities and attention to detail
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Familiarity with PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, Canva, and Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of the television and streaming landscape
- Self-starter with a positive attitude and willingness to learn
