The General Superintendent is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight for multiple heavy civil construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget. This role leads and supports Superintendents and project teams while coordinating resources, planning construction activities, and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders. Working closely with Operations, Project Management, and field leadership, the General Superintendent drives operational excellence, promotes a strong safety culture, and ensures all work is executed in accordance with company standards, client requirements, and project objectives.
Thompson Construction Group has an opening for a General Superintendent working from our operations area in Fort McMurray, AB.
Work Schedule & Travel
- Typical 14 days on / 7 days off (14/7) rotation.
- This is a Drive-In/Drive-Out (DIDO) position for candidates residing in the Fort McMurray area.
- Flights are provided from Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta for employees residing in those centers.
- Camp accommodation and meals are provided while on shift, where applicable.

Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to Superintendents and field leadership teams to drive operational excellence.
- Provide construction direction and oversight to project team comprised of surveyors, estimators, PM’s, PCs, and site Superintendents.
- Monitor project performance, identify risks, and implement proactive solutions to maintain schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
- Coordinate Site Superintendents and project workforce needs.
- Manage project activities throughout lifecycle, including the allocation of adequate resources, scheduling, documentation, budget, and other factors necessary for success.
- Oversee total construction effort to ensure project is completed in accordance with budget and schedule.
- Participate in project planning, forecasting, and resource allocation to maximize operational efficiency.
- Lead regular site meetings and provide clear communication regarding project priorities, safety, and performance expectations.
- Foster a positive safety culture by promoting safe work practices and ensuring compliance with company and client safety expectations.
- Collaborate with clients, project stakeholders, and internal departments to ensure successful project execution and strong working relationships.
- Plan, coordinate and/or supervise activities of all company personnel on assigned project(s).
- Ensure all company, client, and project policies, procedures, standards, etc., are adhered to.
- Provide direction to planning, scheduling, and engineering functions as required.
- Perform additional assignments per supervisor's direction.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Completion of a Construction, Technical Diploma, C.E.T. or Engineering Degree.10 or more years of Earthworks Construction experience.
- 10+ years of experience with heavy civil construction, including earthworks, mine support services, road construction, and site development.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- A solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniques.
- Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills.
- Effectiveness in the areas of construction safety and productivity.
- Superior leadership qualities with a demonstrated track record of dealing successfully with internal and external customers.

- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, etc.),
- Must be able to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test.
Must have:
- Construction Safety Training Systems (CSTS) Certification;
- Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) Certification;
- Leadership for Safety Excellence.
