Accounting Clerk
The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people. The Society manages multiple programs and services through different locations in Vancouver. The Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings is a community-led organization creating meaningful change for the Urban Aboriginal Population that we serve. VAFCS is currently seeking an individual connected with Indigenous community, highly organized, and self-motivated to work with us!
The ideal candidate has Aboriginal life experience or has worked in the Metro Vancouver Aboriginal community with first-hand knowledge of the common life experience of Aboriginal Peoples. Qualified Aboriginal candidates are preferred in accordance with Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code.
Position Objective:
The Accounting Clerk will assist with accounts receivable, invoicing, working papers, audit process, budgets, reporting, reconciliations, and compliance. The Accounting Clerk is part of the Finance and Accounting Team.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Accounts Management
- Follow the documented system of accounting policies & procedures
- Support overall operations of the accounting department, including control systems, transaction-processing operations, policies, and procedures
Accounting Transactions
- Maintain Accounting Records
- Process Revenues from Funders, Rent Roll, Rentals, Events, Catering, etc.
- Process Sales Invoices
- Enter cash deposits into the accounting system
- Perform bank reconciliations
- Issue Charitable Tax Receipts to Donors
- Maintain Donor Database
- Project Accounting
- Other duties as assigned
Reporting & Compliance:
- Assist in preparing reports to senior management, board of directors, and external parties
- Assist with working papers, reconciliations, and fiscal year-end audits
- Produce program reporting, projections, and other reporting as assigned.
Abilities and Qualifications:
- Accounting student and going through the CPA program considered an asset
- Minimum 2-3 years accounting experience in a non-profit organization.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and problem resolution skills.
- Highly adaptable with the ability to conform to rapidly shifting priorities and schedules.
- Excellent time-management, organizational and follow-up skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and deal with multiple concurrent tasks.
- Proactive and innovative with an “improvement seeking” orientation
- Attention to detail
Requirements:
- Successful applicants are subject to a Criminal Record Check re: Vulnerable Sector
- Experience with the MS suite of products like Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook, etc.
- Experience with Sage 50 – Sales, Receivables, Payables, Cash Receipts, Journal Entries, Reporting, etc.
- Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license and a clean Driver's Abstract is an asset.
Expected start date: ASAP
Job Types: Temporary Full-time for 4 months
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, 40 hours per week
Salary: $30 per hour
Benefits: 4% Vacation Pay, Sick days, and Group Benefits (after three months)
