Position Overview
The Grounds Technician will report to the Facilities Operations Manager and is responsible for maintaining the outdoor grounds and surrounding property to ensure that the Dakota Dunes Thermal Spa presents a clean, safe, attractive, and welcoming environment for guests and employees.
This position performs routine landscaping, grounds maintenance, seasonal duties, and general outdoor upkeep while identifying and reporting maintenance and safety concerns.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain lawns, native plantings, gardens, trees, shrubs, planters, and landscaped areas through appropriate watering, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, and seasonal care.
- Keep pathways, entrances, patios, decks, outdoor relaxation areas, and service routes clean and free of hazards, snow, and ice.
- Perform snow removal, shovelling, plowing, sanding, de-icing, and ice monitoring according to established priorities.
- Inspect exterior furniture, fencing, gates, lighting, signage, drainage, irrigation, and outdoor fixtures and report or correct deficiencies.
- Support waste removal, litter control, seasonal setup, storm cleanup, and outdoor event requirements.
- Operate grounds equipment safely and maintain equipment in clean, serviceable condition.
- Monitor slip, trip, ice, drainage, weather, and landscape hazards and respond promptly
- Use chemical, fertilizers, fuels, and equipment in accordance with WHMIS, safety procedures, and environmental requirements.
- Protect guest privacy and tranquility when performing work near thermal pools and relaxation spaces.
- Support responsible water use, native landscaping, waste reduction, and environmentally conscious grounds practices.
- Coordinate work timing with other departments to reduce noise and disruption during peak guest periods.
- Assist with landscaping turnover, deficiency identification, irrigation testing, exterior equipment setup, and seasonal readiness.
- Maintain seasonal maintenance routines, inspection checklists, equipment inventories, and snow/ice response procedures.
- Support placement, preparation and maintenance of outdoor furniture, signage, and guest-use areas.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in landscaping and groundskeeping.
- Experience in resort or hotel maintenance is preferred.
- Ability to operate and maintain landscaping equipment.
- Knowledge of plants, trees, flowers, and the ability to maintain them is an asset.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures.
- Attention to detail and ability to interact with guests and other staff members.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, and perform physically demanding work; and exposure to varying temperatures.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
- WHMIS certification is preferred.
- First Aide and CPR certification is preferred.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.
