Registered Nurse- Peterborough Community Health Centre
Compensation: Annual Salary of $54,753 plus paid time off, group benefits, and HOOPP

Peterborough Community Health Centre (PCHC) is a new and dynamic community health center focused on social justice and health equity through a blend of Western and traditional care approaches. Among several in our province, PCHC offers primary health care and outreach services, emphasizing health promotion and illness prevention. Its mission is to enhance the lives of those facing barriers to their wholistic well-being, incorporating Indigenous practices that promote health through balance and harmony.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
Clinical Nursing
- Deliver primary health care to clients in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards.
- Experience assisting with well baby and well child visits including vaccines.
- Experience supporting people having mental health and substance use issues from a harm reduction perspective.
- Advocate for all clients, with a focus on supporting Indigenous and Newcomer populations
- Participate in individual and program level health promotion initiatives
- Support healthcare providers during clinical procedures as needed.
- Perform basic laboratory procedures and treatments such as urine testing, blood glucose monitoring, wound care, injections, immunizations, allergy treatments, and phlebotomy.
- Conduct client screenings and deliver health education within scope of practice.
- Participate in internal committees and contribute to Peterborough CHC initiatives.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention, control protocols, and occupational health and safety standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Community Nursing
- Provide screening, education, and care in the community with an emphasis on health promotion, chronic disease prevention/management, and sexual health.
- Deliver smoking cessation support through the Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) Program.
- Serve as a health advocate for all clients, with a focus on supporting Indigenous and Newcomer to Canada populations.
- Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion initiatives at both the client and program levels.
- Provide telephone and in person triage in a primary care setting.
- Experience providing sensitive care to 2SLGBTQ+ people
- Collaborate with community groups and agencies to promote and advocate for healthy lifestyles and accessible health resources within the CHC’s catchment area.
- Assist in identifying and leveraging opportunities to secure resources for new and existing community health programs and services.
- Manage ordering and inventory of medical supplies, including items for immunizations, harm reduction programs, and laboratory use.
- Provide education on the proper use of harm reduction supplies.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- All employees of Peterborough CHC are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening upon hire and every 5 years thereafter.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all CHC occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Standard First Aid and CPR (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
- Due to the requirements of this position, a valid Ontario driver’s license, use of own vehicle and proof of valid insurance is required.
- Availability to participate in meetings, community engagement events, and other health promotion activities after regular work hours on occasion.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Completion of a College Diploma in Practical Nursing (or equivalent) is required.
- Licensure: Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).
- Practice Standards: Demonstrated ability to meet the Standards of Nursing Practice for RPNs.
- Experience: A minimum of 3–5 years of experience as an RPN in hospital, public health, or community/primary care settings. Clinical Knowledge:
- Comprehensive understanding of primary health care and the social determinants of health.
- Experience in health promotion, disease prevention, behavior change counseling, program planning, and individual/group counseling.
- Strong knowledge of nursing care in primary care, community health, and chronic disease management.
- Skilled in health assessments and clinical interventions within a family practice setting.
- Understanding of collaborative, interprofessional care principles.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and awareness in care delivery.
- Experience working with diverse and multicultural populations; familiarity with the healthcare needs of Indigenous and/or newcomer communities is considered an asset. Skills and Abilities:
- Pleasant and positive disposition, with a professional and empathetic approach to client care.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with Telus EMR is an asset.
- Fluency in both official languages (English and French) is considered a strong asset.
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a community-based, client-facing role that may require working at multiple sites or outreach locations.
- Work is typically performed in a clinical office setting, with occasional off-site visits (e.g., community events, home visits, outreach programs).
- Standard working hours are daytime weekday shifts, though occasional evenings or weekends may be required depending on program needs.
- The role involves extended periods of standing, walking, and occasional lifting of supplies or equipment.
- Must be able to manage frequent interruptions and respond to emergency or urgent situations in a calm and professional manner.
- Exposure to potentially emotionally charged or sensitive situations, requiring a trauma informed and compassionate approach.
- Strict adherence to infection prevention and control protocols is required.
- May be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) as per public health and organizational guidelines
