SMS Equipment is currently recruiting a Journeyperson, Heavy Equipment Technician to join our Shovels team in Fort McMurray, AB. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely maintaining and supporting shovel equipment while working closely with site operations and adhering to all safety and site requirements. You'll be in the field, keeping machines—and the industries they power—moving.
Base Wage: $71.31 per hour plus applicable premiums
Location: Fort McMurray, AB (Kearl Lake Site)
Schedule: 14x14 rotation, Days and Nights
- This is a camp-based Fly-In/Fly-Out (FIFO) position with customer-provided transportation.

What You'll Do
- Perform assemblies, preventative maintenance, repairs, and complete overhauls on heavy equipment, including shovels, in the field.
- Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized or other testing equipment to determine the extent of repair required.
- Make recommendations regarding extent of repairs and suggest methods of improvement.
- Have a strong awareness and attitude towards workplace health and safety.
- Motivated and able to work in a challenging environment with minimal supervision.
- Work remotely in adverse weather conditions. Job tasks may be physically demanding lifting up to 50 lbs. Confined Space work is required.
What You Bring
- Heavy Equipment Technician with Journeyperson certification
- A minimum of one year of mining shovels experience is required.
- Strong commitment to safety
- Experience in repair/maintenance of heavy equipment
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Valid Class 5 Drivers license
- Experience with Komatsu Mining Shovels is considered an asset
- Interprovincial Red Seal is considered an asset
