Shop Labourer
Location: Staples, Ontario, Canada
Reports To: Shop Foreman
Employment Type: Full-time
Position Summary
The Shop Labourer is responsible for supporting the efficient day-to-day operation of the company's shop facilities, inventory management processes, and material distribution. This position helps maintain a safe, organized, and productive work environment by coordinating inventory, preparing materials for field staff, maintaining shop and fleet standards, and assisting with deliveries and general operational support. The successful candidate will comply with all applicable Ontario legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act, 2000, and company health and safety policies.
Key Responsibilities
Shop Operations
- Assist in organizing and coordinating the day-to-day operations of the shop.
- Deliver materials, equipment, and supplies to job sites, suppliers, and other company locations as required.
- Inspect the shop, company vehicles, equipment, and tools to identify unsafe conditions or maintenance requirements.
- Report deficiencies promptly and recommend repair or replacement of equipment where appropriate.
- Assist in maintaining records of equipment inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the shop, yard, and parking areas.
- Assist with job site clean-up activities and the return of materials and equipment to the shop.
- Perform additional shop duties as assigned.
Inventory Management
- Conduct daily physical inspections of inventory and shop supplies as directed.
- Receive incoming shipments and verify materials against packing slips.
- Forward packing slips and related documentation to the purchasing department.
- Prepare and stage material orders for journeypersons, managers, and other authorized personnel.
- Provide accurate material lists to purchasing for inventory replenishment.
- Record materials returned from job sites and communicate inventory updates to purchasing.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and support periodic inventory counts.
- Report inventory discrepancies, shortages, or damaged materials.
Health and Safety
- Perform all duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, company policies, and established safe work procedures.
- Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment.
- Report workplace hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.
Equipment Operation and Responsibilities
The Shop Labourer is responsible for the safe operation, inspection, and care of company equipment used to support shop and field operations. Equipment may include, but is not limited to:
- Forklifts, aerial work platforms, scissor lifts, material handling equipment, pallet jacks, company vehicles and trailers, power tools and shop equipment
- Operate equipment only when properly trained, competent, and authorized by the Company.
- safe operation, inspection, and care of company equipment used to support shop and field operations
- Conduct and document pre-use inspections of equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and company policies.
- Immediately remove unsafe or defective equipment from service and report deficiencies to management.
- Safely load, unload, transport, and store materials using appropriate material handling equipment.
- Ensure equipment is maintained in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Report accidents, near misses, equipment damage, and maintenance requirements promptly.
- Comply with all manufacturer's operating instructions, company safe work procedures, and applicable Ontario legislation.
Qualifications
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence with a satisfactory driving record.
- A Class A Restricted licence.
- Must be bondable.
- Ability to travel to secondary company locations to provide operational coverage as required.
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and equipment in accordance with company policies.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift and move materials in accordance with safe work practices.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer skills and experience with inventory or warehouse systems.
Physical Requirements
The position regularly requires the employee to:
- Lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 lbs independently and heavier loads with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and work from elevated platforms for extended periods.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Perform repetitive manual handling tasks.
- Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety boots, high-visibility clothing, hard hats, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, and fall protection equipment where required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in a shop environment with regular travel to job sites and suppliers.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, and moving materials.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions when working outdoors or making deliveries.
- Use of tools, equipment, and company vehicles as required.
Employment Requirements
Employment is conditional upon:
- Being legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Maintaining a valid Ontario Class G driver's licence throughout employment.
- Remaining bondable.
- Complying with all company policies, including health and safety requirements.
Compensation
- Hourly rate (range from $21.00 - $25.75)
