A Loving Spoonful is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to be a part of a wonderful, fast-paced, and compassionate team. The position is full-time from Monday to Friday, with varying shifts between 7am and 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. The position includes a generous benefits package after six months of employment.
The Organization
A Loving Spoonful is a very dynamic not-for-profit organization. We are a volunteer-driven, charitable society delivering free meals and nutritional support to individuals and families living with HIV and other co-existing illnesses, as well as supporting vulnerable populations with subsidized meal support.
We are seeking a dependable and energetic Kitchen Assistant who will join our dedicated and high-energy team. This is a hands-on role that combines kitchen production, meal packaging, food safety, and client meal deliveries. A Loving Spoonful will be expanding in the near future and there is potential for the right candidate to grow their role and position within the organization.
Qualifications and the Candidate
This is a diverse role in a fast-moving environment. We are seeking a self-motivated individual who is organized, resourceful, energetic, and excited to be a part of an important community organization.
Kitchen
- Assist with food preparation including washing, peeling, chopping, portioning, and packaging ingredients
- Assist with the preparation and assembly of meals, soups, frozen meals, and snack packs
- Package, label, and store meals according to established procedures
- Support daily meal production 7 catering
- Assist with receiving food deliveries and storing products appropriately
- Maintain organized and stocked food preparation areas
- Assist with inventory rotation and proper storage of food products
- Support production schedules to ensure meals are prepared and ready for distribution
Deliveries
- Assist with scheduled meal deliveries throughout the Lower Mainland
- Drive the organization's cargo van for daily meal deliveries, food pick-ups, and other operational needs
- Load and unload meals, food donations, and supplies safely and efficiently
- Ensure deliveries are completed accurately, professionally, and on schedule
- Maintain positive and respectful interactions with clients, volunteers, and community partners
- Assist with route preparation and delivery logistics as required
Cleaning and Food Safety
- Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment as needed
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen workspaces, equipment, refrigerators, freezers, and storage areas
- Follow daily cleaning schedules and sanitation procedures
- Ensure compliance with FoodSafe standards and organizational policies
- Assist with garbage, recycling, and compost removal
Volunteer Support
- Work alongside volunteers during meal preparation and packaging activities
- Assist volunteers with kitchen tasks as directed
- Help create a welcoming, positive, and respectful environment for volunteers
- Support team efforts to meet daily meal production and packaging goals
Other Duties and Skills
- Valid BC Driver's Licence required
- Comfortable driving a cargo van throughout the Lower Mainland
- Ability to work well with a wide range of clientele, volunteers, stakeholders, and community partners
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- A self-starter with an ability to work independently, as well as within an established framework
- A personal resilience combined with a compassionate, insightful, respectful perspective towards all individuals without bias or discrimination
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
- FoodSafe certification is considered an asset
- Other duties as required
