Home Care Assistance Edmonton is looking for a Certified Health Care Aide to join our team. Healthcare Aide is responsible for the physical care and emotional support of our clients who may no longer be able to take care of themselves due to illness, injury, surgery, or disability.
The ideal candidate must be able to care for our clients and their property with dignity, patience, compassion, and respect. This person will encourage and remain empathetic to the clients at all times.
Responsibilities
1. Personal Care and Hygiene
HCAs assist with "Activities of Daily Living" (ADLs), ensuring residents maintain their dignity and comfort:
- Bathing and Grooming: Providing bed baths or assisting with showers, performing oral care (teeth and dentures), and helping with shaving or hair care.
- Dressing: Assisting residents with putting on and taking off clothing, including specialized items like compression stockings.
- Toileting: Managing incontinence care, changing briefs, and assisting residents with regular bathroom schedules.
2. Mobility and Safety
Ensuring residents move safely is a critical safety responsibility to prevent falls and injuries:
- Safe Transfers: Using mechanical lifts (such as Sit-to-Stand or overhead lifts) and gait belts to move residents between beds, chairs, and toilets.
- Positioning: Regularly turning bed-bound residents to prevent pressure ulcers (bedsores).
- Exercise: Assisting with range-of-motion exercises and walking (ambulation) to maintain muscle strength.
3. Nutritional Support
HCAs ensure residents receive proper nutrition according to their specific care plans:
- Feeding: Assisting or completely feeding residents who have difficulty swallowing or physical limitations.
- Special Diets: Ensuring the resident receives the correct food texture (e.g., thickened liquids or minced textures) to prevent choking.
- Hydration: Encouraging fluid intake and recording accurate "In and Out" (I/O) data.
4. Clinical Observation and Reporting
While HCAs do not diagnose, they are the "eyes and ears" for the nursing staff (LPNs and RNs):
- Monitoring Status: Noticing and reporting skin breakdown, changes in appetite, or signs of pain.
- Vitals: Measuring and recording temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate.
- Documentation: Charting daily activities and any unusual behavioral or physical changes in the resident’s record.
5. Emotional and Social Support
For many residents, an HCA is their most frequent social interaction:
- Companionship: Building a rapport and providing a sense of security and belonging.
- Dementia Care: Using specialized communication techniques to assist residents experiencing confusion, agitation, or memory loss.
- Activity Assistance: Helping residents get to and from facility activities, such as music therapy or social gatherings.
Essential Skills for Success
- Time Management: Balancing the needs of multiple residents during a shift.
- Infection Control: Strict adherence to hand hygiene and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Physical Strength: Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive lifting.
- Communication: Clearly relaying information to the healthcare team and interacting kindly with residents' families.
