Role: STAFF ACCOUNTANT – JOB DESCRIPTION

Hogg, Shain & Scheck (“HSS”) is a boutique professional accounting firm that has been serving southern Ontario for over 50 years – and we’re growing! We provide audit, tax, and advisory services to a variety of types of clients, including entrepreneurs, corporations, charities and not-for-profit organizations, and subsidiaries of foreign entities.
We are a firm comprised of experienced and inspiring leaders, committed to the development and success of our team, personally and professionally through our own HSS Academy, CPA student programs, networking opportunities, seminar series, and our dine & learn events.
We also maintain international connections as a member of the MSI Global Alliance, a global association of over 250 independent accounting, legal, and consulting firms in 105 countries throughout the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle-East and Africa.
Responsibilities:
- Preparation of compilation financial information, including completion of all paperless working papers, adjusting journal entries and financial statements in accordance with Firm standards;
- Assist with review engagements and audit procedures under supervision of senior team members including completion of selected paperless working papers, adjusting journal entries and financial statements in accordance with Firm standards;
- Preparation of corporate income tax returns, including supporting schedules and forms;
- Preparation of not-for-profit tax returns and Registered Charity Information returns;
- Preparation and filing of Harmonized Sales Tax returns and preparation of required T-slips as needed;
- Provide bookkeeping assistance to clients as needed;
- Seek opportunities to provide recommendations to clients on business improvements, while demonstrating an intellectual curiosity to understand the client’s business;
- Track and reporting billable time in accordance with Firm standards;
- Prepare career goal outlines and a self-evaluation of your performance thereon;
- Prepare a self evaluation of your performance on engagements;
- Work in various team sizes in a professional manner;
- Drive process improvement initiatives and implementing best tax practices within the Firm;
- Be solutions-oriented – collaborate with senior team members to develop practical solutions for our clients and the Firm;
- Be committed to continuous personal growth; and
- Be an ambassador for the Firm and participate in achieving our growth strategy.
Qualifications
Business Commerce Degree or equivalent undergraduate degree with a major in Accounting;
Enrolment, or intention to enroll, in the CPA program with a strong commitment to the CPA profession;
Proficiency in Word and Excel;
Demonstrated leadership ability and academic excellence;
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, that allow you to adapt to a variety of clients and industries/associations;
Excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to work with others effectively in teams;
Genuine enthusiasm about helping people;
Ability to thrive in an environment of pressing deadlines and constantly changing conditions;
Excellent time and project management skills;
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to present new ideas and conceptualize new approaches, to tackle problems systematically to determine causes and produce solutions;
A keen eye for detail and focus on quality;
Steadfast commitment to excellence; and
Ability to work independently.
