Design Technician / Millwork Designer
Location: Kelowna, BC
Company: bwp_spaces
About Us
bwp_spaces is a high-end architectural millwork and custom interiors company based in Kelowna, BC. We design, engineer, fabricate, finish, package, and install detailed cabinetry, furniture, wall systems, feature millwork, and interior packages for luxury residential, commercial, hospitality, and specialty projects.
Our work sits between design and craft. We use detailed 3D modelling, technical drawing, CNC manufacturing, traditional cabinetmaking, in-house finishing, and careful installation to turn design intent into real, buildable work. Strong communication between design, project management, CNC, finishing, assembly, and installation is central to how we work.

The Opportunity
We are looking for a full-time Design Technician / Millwork Designer to join our Kelowna-based design team. This role is for someone who enjoys the technical side of design: understanding how something should look, then working out how it can be drawn, built, finished, shipped, and installed properly.
Working in SolidWorks and SWOOD, you will create detailed 3D models, sign-off drawing packages, production drawings, material take-offs, hardware information, and CNC-ready files for custom millwork and furniture projects.
You will work closely with the Design Manager, Project Managers, CNC Team, Production Team, Finishers, and Installers to resolve details before they become problems in the shop or on site. This includes thinking through materials, appliances, hardware, lighting, tolerances, site conditions, fabrication sequence, and installation logic.
The ideal person has strong CAD skills, a practical cabinetmaking or furniture mindset, good attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with both office and shop-floor teams. We are not looking for someone who only wants to draft lines; we are looking for someone who wants to help make complex millwork easier to understand, easier to build, and better executed.
Key Responsibilities
· Review tender drawings, specifications, site information, client requirements, design handovers, and project briefs to understand the full millwork scope.
· Help plan projects around real materials, construction methods, appliances, hardware, lighting, finishes, tolerances, site conditions, and installation requirements.
· Create accurate 3D models in SolidWorks and SWOOD using suitable modelling approaches, including master parts, assemblies, SWOOD library components, and solid-body modelling where required.
· Produce clear contract drawing packages for client, architect, designer, and project team review and approval.
· Produce detailed production drawings, sections, details, schedules, labels, and notes that can be used confidently by the shop, finishing, assembly, and installation teams.
· Prepare material take-offs, hardware schedules, cut-list information, and bill of materials data to support procurement and production planning.
· Develop CNC-ready models and documentation, then coordinate handover with the CNC team to confirm machining intent and key details.
· Identify buildability issues early, including access, clearances, door and drawer function, panel alignment, scribe requirements, service coordination, and installation sequencing.
· Communicate with project management, CNC, production, finishing, and installation teams to resolve questions before fabrication starts.
· Contribute to drawing standards, SWOOD library development, reusable details, project templates, and continuous improvement within the design workflow.
· Keep models, drawings, files, project information, and shared resources organized, accurate, and easy for the wider team to follow.
Qualifications
· 3+ years of experience in architectural millwork, cabinetmaking, furniture design, production drafting, technical design, or a closely related field.
· Strong proficiency with parametric CAD software; SolidWorks experience is strongly preferred.
· Experience with SolidWorks and SWOOD is strongly preferred, as these are the primary design and production software platforms used at bwp_spaces. Experience with AutoCAD, Rhino, CAM software, or other 3D modelling tools is also valuable, particularly where it supports strong modelling ability, technical detailing, and an understanding of digital fabrication workflows.
· Practical understanding of cabinetry, furniture construction, joinery, hardware, materials, finishes, panel products, veneers, and fabrication methods.
· Ability to read, interpret, and produce technical drawings, sections, details, schedules, specifications, and shop drawing notes.
· Good understanding of how design decisions affect CNC machining, assembly, finishing, delivery, and installation.
· Strong attention to detail, with the ability to spot buildability, tolerance, sequencing, and coordination issues early.
· Comfortable working between design intent, technical detailing, production constraints, and shop-floor feedback.
· Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
· Formal training in design, drafting, woodworking, cabinetmaking, furniture making, architecture, engineering, or a related field is preferred but not essential.
· Experience with lean manufacturing, process documentation, BIM coordination, scan data, or continuous improvement is an asset.
· Clear communication, strong teamwork, curiosity, and a practical problem-solving mindset.
What We Offer
· Competitive wage: $35–$40/hour, based on experience.
· Paid vacation, starting at 2 weeks.
· Extended health and dental benefits (individual or family)
· The opportunity to work on high-end, technically challenging custom millwork, furniture, wall systems, and interior packages.
· Exposure to both traditional craftsmanship and modern digital manufacturing workflows.
· Opportunities for growth and professional development
· A supportive, informal team environment with high standards, practical problem-solving, and pride in the finished work.
