Job Summary
We are seeking a highly meticulous Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic / Engine Rebuild Specialist to join our in-shop production team in Calgary. In this role, you will not be dealing with random breakdown field service or emergency roadside repairs. Instead, you will work in a structured, specialized shop environment dedicated entirely to the complete teardown, inspection, component sourcing, high-precision rebuilding, and testing of heavy-duty Caterpillar diesel engines and powertrain components.
Core Responsibilities
- Precision Engine Rebuilding: Complete full teardowns and precise rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines, focusing primarily on Caterpillar 3176C models and similar core platforms.
- Component Overhauls: Diagnose, rebuild, and reassemble complex powertrain and hydraulic systems, including Cat 140H/160H transmissions, differentials, brake groups, and circle drives.
- Quality Assurance & Testing: Test all rebuilt engines and components to ensure they strictly meet internal quality benchmarks, functional tolerances, and manufacturer specifications prior to stocking.
- Failure Analysis: Inspect core components during teardown to detect faults, measure wear, and determine exact part-replacement requirements.
- Blueprint Integration: Read and interpret complex technical manuals, fluid schematic charts, and engineering blueprints to integrate our custom-manufactured components (e.g., upgraded Grader Circle Segments).
- Inventory Documentation: Accurately log parts utilized, measurements taken (tolerances, clearances), and rebuild phases completed to ensure seamless exchange-sales tracking.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of dedicated heavy-duty mechanical experience, with a heavy emphasis on diesel engine rebuilding and component overhauls (Caterpillar experience is highly preferred).
- Education & Credentials: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship or holding an Alberta Journeyman/Red Seal ticket is a major asset.
- Technical Precision: Exceptional competency with micrometres, dial indicators, torque multipliers, and specialized precision engine assembly tools.
- Component Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of heavy equipment planetary systems, wet brake assemblies, and hydraulic flow.
- Tool Inventory: Possession of a standard personal inventory of heavy mechanical assembly and hand tools.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Location: 100% in-shop role at our facility in Calgary, AB (SE Industrial district). No field travel required.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods during heavy component assembly.
- Heavy Lifting: Ability to safely lift and position components weighing up to 50 lbs manually and utilize overhead shop cranes for heavier blocks and transmission housings.
Pay: $26.22-$56.45 per hour
