Your Opportunity at SUNSET:
Sunset Recycles and Sales Ltd is seeking a dedicated and proactive Field HSE Advisor to strengthen our health and safety culture and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
The Team:
The SUNSET Metals & Mining team is a group of experienced professionals dedicated to providing innovative and reliable scrap metal recycling services. With a strong focus on safety and customer satisfaction, our team operates across strategically located facilities in Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) , offering a full range of services from recycling and clean-up to demolition and surplus scrap metal marketing.
Work Environment:
This position is located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Applicants must be willing and able to work on 10 hours a day shift and/or rotational work schedule 7&7 .
Primary Responsibilities:
- Monitor and support the implementation and effectiveness of Sunset's Health, Safety & Environment Management System (HSE MS).
- Conduct incident, injury, property damage, environmental, and near miss investigations, including identifying root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Track corrective actions and verify completion within established timelines.
- Conduct formal workplace inspections, field audits, behavioural observations, and hazard assessments.
- Identify hazards and work collaboratively with supervisors and employees to develop appropriate controls.
- Monitor compliance with company policies, safe work procedures, legislation, and client-specific HSE requirements.
- Maintain accurate HSE documentation, records, and reports.
- Collect, analyze, and enter HSE data into company tracking systems.
- Compile and interpret safety performance metrics, including incident statistics, inspection trends, corrective action status, and leading/lagging indicators.
- Prepare regular HSE reports for management and clients as required.
- Facilitate and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, pre-job meetings, and client HSE meetings.
- Provide coaching and guidance to employees and supervisors regarding safe work practices and hazard recognition.
- Communicate safety alerts, lessons learned, regulatory updates, and industry best practices to all team members.
- Assist with the development, review, and revision of HSE policies, procedures, safe work practices, and hazard assessments.
- Support orientation programs for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Participate in emergency response planning, drills, and incident preparedness activities.
- Assist with regulatory inspections and client audits.
- Promote employee participation in HSE initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Support return-to-work and injury management processes as required.
- Perform other HSE-related duties as assigned.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions; perform incident causation analysis and implement corrective actions
- Lead and review Job Safety Analysis (JSA), updating as necessary
- Conduct field tours, worker observations, and worksite safety inspections
- Review procedures to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and client standards
- Attend and contribute to toolbox meetings, pre-job planning, safety meetings, and client/HSE team meetings
- Develop and support toolbox talks and safety meetings
- Maintain accurate documentation for inspections, orientations, safety reports, and training records
- Update records in the Safety Management Systems, ensuring accuracy of site statistics
- Stay updated on OH&S legislation, Federal and Provincial laws, and company policies.
- Perform general administrative duties including filing, booking training, and data entry
Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of applicable Occupational Health & Safety legislation and regulations.

- Understanding of environmental regulations and best management practices.
- Knowledge of client-specific HSE requirements and contractor management programs.
- Working knowledge of Health, Safety & Environment Management Systems.
- Experience conducting incident and near miss investigations using root cause analysis methodologies.
- Ability to conduct workplace inspections, audits, and behavioural observations.
- Strong hazard identification and risk assessment skills.
- Knowledge of safe work procedures, hazard controls, and industry best practices.
- Ability to interpret HSE performance data and prepare meaningful reports.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective presentation and facilitation skills for safety meetings and training sessions.
- Ability to influence and coach employees at all organizational levels.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and HSE reporting software.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with operations and management.
- A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) and a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract.
- Valid CSTS & OSSA/CSO/BSO training.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written communication, and listening skills.
- Strong conflict resolution skills, with the ability to collaborate with other groups to mitigate and solve issues.
- Experience with SiteDocs software is an asset.
Position Requirements:
- Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
- Must be a resident of Fort McMurray or surrounding areas.
- Eligible to work on all client sites.
