Job Summary
Alice Huynh Law Corporation, sole practitioner, specializing in family law and estate litigation, with some civil litigation, and wills and probate is seeking a highly motivated articling student to join their practice. The articling student will need to start immediately as a legal assistant until they receive approval from the Law Society to begin their articling. Flexibility to start full-time or part-time as legal assistant before they begin their articling term. The articling student will be paid hourly while working as a legal assistant and will receive a salary once their articling period begins.
The articling student will receive personalized mentoring from a principal committed to their success. The role involves assisting counsel in a variety of legal tasks, including drafting and preparing documents/pleadings, attending chambers, assisting with and attending trial, and observing and conducting client meetings. This position offers the opportunity to build practical skills in litigation and client management while gaining insight into the day-to-day practice of law in a client-focused environment.
The office is centrally located in Burnaby, a six-minute walk from Royal Oak Skytrain station.
Responsibilities
- Assist with case preparation, including preparing memoranda of law, and drafting documents as required.
- Appear in court/trial, assisting in court preparation and providing support for hearings or other proceedings as required.
- Manage client communications, including scheduling consultations, examinations for discovery, etc. and responding to inquiries.
- Preparing pleadings (i.e Notice of Family/Civil Claim, Responses to Family/Civil Claim, Financial Statements, Affidavits, Financial Statements, List of Documents, Orders), and filing legal documents with courts and other relevant entities.
- Assist in the management of case deadlines and ensure timely follow-ups.
Qualifications
- Completion of a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Master of Laws (LLM) by the start date of the position.
- Strong academic record with excellent research and writing capabilities.
- Attention to detail and an ability to work under pressure with competing deadlines.
- Ability to use own initiative and make independent decisions.
- Excellent organizational skills.
