Nakehndan - Knowing Your Truth is a not-for-profit organization supporting Indigenous survivors of sexual assault and their families to heal as a unit. Nakehndan offers a variety of culturally infused programming to women and families in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding areas in a non-front-line capacity.

SCOPE:
The Indigenous Anti-Human Trafficking Liaison will work with the community to identify community needs and assist in building capacity to address human trafficking and support Indigenous survivors of trafficking. The IAHT Liaison will assist in providing targeted service-planning and delivery supports to Indigenous agencies and communities, as well as assisting non-Indigenous agencies seeking to provide culturally appropriate services to Indigenous survivors of Human Trafficking. Liaisons will have a thorough understanding of the issues that Indigenous women are facing in their lives and how human trafficking specifically impacts Indigenous women and will assist in the development of unique services that are tailored to meet their needs.
This position may require you to work evenings and weekends. It may also require you to work in a stressful environment, sometimes dealing with women in crisis situations. The ability to function flexibly, independently, and under pressure while managing situations, including emergencies, is an ongoing expectation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Network with organizations, service agencies and community businesses to connect regarding services for Indigenous survivors of trafficking and to provide information presentations, dialogue, and information about human trafficking.
- Utilize an Indigenous gender-based approach - assessing community buy-in and needs within Indigenous agencies providing front-line services.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous worldviews and traditional protocols, particularly as it relates to the exploitation and trafficking of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ community members.
- Assess agencies’ knowledge and consideration of existing and potential human trafficking activities in their communities and provide advice to agencies on how their service plans, programs and policies can better meet the needs of Indigenous survivors of human trafficking.
- Develop a work plan identifying service agencies within the community that can provide services to survivors.
- Address culturally specific prevention and awareness appropriate to Sault Ste Marie and its Anti-Human Trafficking initiatives.
- Leverage existing resources with a unique focus on the specific needs of Indigenous survivors of trafficking.
- Develop a service model and work with local and regional agencies to support and assist with developing plans to meet the needs of Indigenous survivors.
- Assist with the creation of an Indigenous-specific prevention and awareness campaign within the province.
- Keep abreast of pertinent issues in communities and the province in terms of Human Trafficking, particularly the sex trafficking of Indigenous women.
- Respond to trends around mining and resource extraction and the increased risk of trafficking in affected communities. This includes identifying service needs of Indigenous communities in remote, rural and fly-in communities.
- Attend meetings to provide updates on local and regional work as well as formulating provincial responses that are specific to the needs of Indigenous communities and survivors.
- Assemble data and prepare and submit reports, periodic and special reports, manuals and correspondence.
- Report to and collaborate with the management team to successfully implement the program.
- Work within a designated budget.
- Support, promote and encourage the program’s mandates, purposes as well as those of Nakehndan: Knowing Your Truth.
- All other duties as assigned.
Skills and Ability

- Excellent organizational skills:
- Solid time management skills, with the ability to complete and prioritize a variety of tasks within a given timeline, with adherence to important deadlines
- Accurately track and submit program expenses, invoices, and other financial records
- Computer literate and solid understanding and use of Microsoft 365.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Qualifications
- Required to produce a favourable CPIC within the past two years
- Required valid Driver’s License and vehicle
- Education Degree in Social Work or related field, and/or 1 year of work experience in a relevant field
- Certification in Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, and/or restorative practice with Anishinaabe populations is considered an asset
Experience
- Required experience or personal insights into working cooperatively and non-judgmentally with people with lived experience, mental health, etc.
- Required experience working with Indigenous peoples and an awareness of the impacts of colonization.
- Required experience in dealing with Indigenous family dynamics and Indigenous communities.
- Required knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, ceremonies, and teachings
- Preference given to those with experience working with survivors of SA, IPV, GBV, and HT
- Preference given to those with experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and/or related fields.
- Preference given to those with knowledge (working or fluent) of Anishinaabemowin
