Part-Time Office & Customer Service AssistantJob Summary
Island View Nursery is looking for a friendly, outgoing, reliable, and organized person to join our team in Central Saanich.
This position will begin with flexible part-time hours, allowing both the successful applicant and the nursery some flexibility while the role is established. Our goal is for this position to develop into a full-time, year-round role for the right person. Additional hours will become available as the position grows and responsibilities develop.
The position is primarily office, customer service, inventory, and computer-based work, with some time spent around the nursery checking plant locations, quantities and sizes, taking photos, updating inventory, and helping customers find what they are looking for. There is little to no physical labour involved.
This is a very customer-facing position. You will be answering phones and emails, helping customers in person, checking customers out, and becoming one of the familiar faces our customers regularly deal with. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys talking to people, is approachable and friendly, and can provide excellent customer service.
Plant and nursery knowledge is highly preferred and would be a significant advantage in this position. Customers regularly have questions about plants, varieties, sizes, availability, and locations throughout the nursery, so someone who already has a good working knowledge of plants will be able to step into the role much more easily.
However, extensive plant knowledge is not strictly required if you are interested in learning. We are willing to teach the right person the nursery-specific knowledge they need.
Main Duties
- Greeting and helping customers in person
- Checking customers out and processing payments
- Using QuickBooks and a Moneris payment terminal
- Answering incoming phone calls
- Responding to customer emails clearly and professionally
- Helping customers locate plants and products throughout the nursery
- Keeping nursery inventory accurate and up to date
- Walking through the nursery to record plant locations, quantities, sizes, and other inventory information
- Updating and maintaining inventory spreadsheets
- Using computer and AI tools to help organize and complete inventory information
- Uploading inventory information to our website
- Keeping our WordPress website updated with plant availability, sales, promotions, and other small changes
- Taking photos of plants or nursery material when needed
- Potentially helping with social media or other online content in the future
What We're Looking For
The ideal person will be:
- Friendly, outgoing, approachable, and comfortable talking with customers
- Knowledgeable about plants, gardening, horticulture, or nursery products—or enthusiastic and willing to learn
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work consistently
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Comfortable working independently once trained
- Confident using computers and learning new software
- Comfortable working with spreadsheets, email, websites, and online tools
- Able to communicate clearly and professionally in person, by phone, and by email
- Comfortable moving between office work and walking around the nursery as needed
- Able to stay organized during our busy spring season
Previous experience working at a nursery, garden centre, landscaping company, greenhouse, or similar horticultural business would be especially valuable.
Some QuickBooks experience is strongly preferred. Experience with WordPress, spreadsheets, inventory management, websites, customer service, or point-of-sale systems would also be an asset.
We are willing to train the right person on our specific systems and procedures.
Pay & Schedule
Starting wage: $25–$30 per hour, depending on experience, plant knowledge, and relevant skills.
The position will begin with flexible part-time hours, with the opportunity for hours and responsibilities to increase over time. Our goal is to develop this into a full-time, year-round position for the right person.
There is also opportunity for wage growth as the role develops and the successful applicant takes on greater responsibility.
