Choral Accompanist
Job Description
Mission of Choral Morphosis Arts Society: To provide the opportunity for adults with developmental and physical disabilities to participate in music and arts, regardless of their abilities. To nurture all in a fun, safe and inclusive environment.
Commitment: Saturdays, 9:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. September through June (excluding long weekends)
Compensation: $110 per rehearsal week
Background Information
Choral Morphosis offers two programs that run back-to-back on Saturday mornings.
Our Choral Program welcomes individuals aged 16 and older who have a love of music, singing, and movement, regardless of musical experience or ability. This long-standing, non-auditioned choir celebrates inclusion and encourages participation from people of all abilities.
Our Choral Arts Program is designed for participants seeking a more advanced performing arts experience. In addition to singing, members participate in choreography, script reading, acting, and musical theatre performances.
The accompanist plays an essential role in supporting both programs by providing engaging, adaptable piano accompaniment during rehearsals and performances.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide piano accompaniment for weekly rehearsals for both CMAS programs.
- Prepare accompaniment music in advance of rehearsals and performances.
- Accompany two major concerts each season, along with any additional performances or community events as scheduled.
- Work collaboratively with the Choral Director to prepare music and support rehearsal goals.
- Adapt accompaniment as needed to support singers of varying musical abilities and learning styles.
- Maintain a positive, encouraging, and inclusive rehearsal atmosphere.
- Communicate regularly with the Choral Director regarding rehearsal planning and musical needs.
- Communicate with the Program Director regarding scheduling or program-related matters as required.
- Attend rehearsals and performances punctually and prepared.
Qualifications:
- Strong piano accompanying skills and the ability to read music proficiently.
- Experience accompanying choirs, vocal ensembles, or musical theatre is preferred.
- A Music Degree, diploma, or current enrollment in a music program is considered an asset.
- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt musically to meet the needs of singers with diverse abilities.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental or physical disabilities is an asset but not required.
- First Aid certification is an asset.
