POSITION OVERVIEW
Surrey Police Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for an Accountant 2 to join our Financial Services Section, within the Office of the Chief Constable. Reporting to the Finance Manager, the incumbent is responsible for professional accounting, financial management and budget work. The successful candidate provides professional accounting services, advises, audits and studies reconciliations and reports.
Schedule / Hours of Work
This is an on-site position and the anticipated schedule for this position is 7 hrs/day and 35 hrs/week. Please note, the hours are subject to change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs budget functions for annual and long range operating and capital including maintains daily, biweekly, quarterly and annual controls, prepares analyses, reconciliations and reports, and, prepares, compiles and publishes operating and capital budgets, corporate plans, and studies.
- Controls, monitors, analyzes, and reports on budgeted versus actual revenues and expenditures.
- Provides professional accounting services, advises, audits and studies reconciliations and reports.
- Prepares year end and other working papers and assists with the preparation of financial statements.
- Makes ongoing recommendations for operational improvements in all areas of Surrey Police Service (SPS) operations.
- Assists with income tax and other tax procedures.
- Assists in the review, selection, design, testing and implementation of procedures and systems.
- Assists in stewardship responsibilities, banking, and investment procedures.
- Assists division and section managers with operations, supervision, training, and presentations.
- Assists with operational requirements of other divisions.
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and plan, organize and coordinate assignments.
- Sound knowledge of audit process and thorough accounting knowledge including fund accounting.
- Knowledge in public sector budgeting.
- Good analytical skills and summarization skills
- Perform and succeed under the pressure of deadlines with abilities to determine and adjust priorities.
- Working knowledge of SPS policies, procedures and standards, the Municipal Act, and business law.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a Professional Accounting Designation
- A minimum two years of direct related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- All applicants must obtain and maintain the required police security clearance throughout their employment with SPS.

- The compensation range is $45.61 /hour - $51.52/hour (pay grade 26) based on 2024 rates.
