Roncesvalles Community Hub Position: Part-time Evening Caretaker

We have an active commitment to social justice and community building. The Evening Caretaker is a public face of the Roncesvalles United Church (RUC) community. They are responsible for ensuring the church building and surrounding property are clean, safe, and wellmaintained. This permanent 0.5 part-time position includes routine cleaning, monitoring building access, and general oversight of church facilities to ensure they are presentable and functional for worship services, events, and daily use.
Accountability
The Evening Caretaker reports directly to the Property Leader for urgent and facility-related concerns, and to the Ministry and Personnel (M&P) Committee for all human resources matters, including scheduling and vacation time (in consultation with the Property Leader).
Primary Responsibilities
1. Cleaning Keep RUC buildings clean, attractive, and well-maintained.
- Inspect the building each shift and communicate non-urgent maintenance needs to the Morning Caretaker.
- Perform routine cleaning tasks including:
- Maintaining washrooms in a clean, hygienic condition with all supplies stocked (toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels)
- Collecting and disposing of trash and recyclables, sorting into compost and recycling where possible
- Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors on all levels
- Dusting and disinfecting high-touch surfaces and counters
- Washing glass windows and doors
- Cleaning kitchens
- Completing special projects as requested (e.g., deep cleaning carpets)
2.Safety and Building Security
- Monitor the building and entryways for safety hazards; report or correct them promptly (including clearing snow and salting in winter as needed).
- Maintain emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment; complete mandatory health and safety training.
- Monitor building access, contacting the Property Leader or Emergency Services as required.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and/or alarm activations.
- Perform nightly rounds to ensure all doors and windows are secured and the alarm system is activated.
Note: Additional tasks may arise that are not listed above. Staff are expected to respond flexibly. If an additional responsibility becomes a regular part of the role, this job description will be updated.
Knowledge and Experience
- Previous experience in custodial work or building caretaking is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to a safe, clean environment
- Physical capability to lift, carry, bend, and perform manual tasks
- High reliability, trustworthiness, and discretion
- Willingness to be flexible with working hours and to undertake job-related training
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to relay maintenance or cleaning concerns to daytime staff
- Friendly demeanour with effective interpersonal skills and the ability to de-escalate situations
- High degree of integrity and maturity
- Ability to multitask and demonstrate initiative Self-starter who can work independently without direct supervision
Working Conditions
This role involves:
- Regular evening shifts
- Handling chemical cleaning products (training provided)
Physical Requirements
This role is physically demanding. You must be able to:
- Stand for extended periods with minimal breaks
- Walk up and down stairs across three floors (basement, main, and 2nd floor) of a large church building
- Perform repetitive motions including walking, bending, and twisting
- Lift moderate to heavy objects regularly

Working Hours and Entitlements

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
