Blue HDD Utilities & Excavating Inc. is seeking an experienced Fiber Jetting Operator to join our team. This is a unionized position governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient installation of fiber optic cable using jetting, blowing, and related installation methods in support of telecommunications and utility infrastructure projects. This role requires regular travel, occasional overnight stays, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, operate, and maintain fiber jetting and cable blowing equipment.
- Install fiber optic cable within existing conduit and duct systems using approved installation methods.
- Conduct duct proving, swabbing, mandrelling, and conduit preparation activities prior to cable installation.
- Install pull lines, mule tape, and associated telecommunications infrastructure as required.
- Verify conduit routes and identify potential issues prior to installation.
- Safely handle, transport, and install fiber optic cable, reels, and related materials.
- Monitor installation activities to ensure cable is installed safely and without damage.
- Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of jetting equipment, compressors, generators, and support equipment.
- Troubleshoot installation issues and communicate concerns to supervisors and project managers.
- Complete daily production reports, equipment inspection reports, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
- Work closely with construction crews, HDD crews, utility owners, technicians, and client representatives to ensure successful project completion.
- Assist with restoration, cleanup, and general site activities as required.
- Participate in daily tailboard meetings, hazard assessments, and safety inspections.
- Ensure compliance with all site-specific rules, regulations, permits, and safety requirements.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining communication with supervisors and project teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience with fiber optic cable installation, jetting, blowing, pulling, telecommunications construction, or related utility construction work.
- Experience operating fiber jetting equipment, cable blowing equipment, compressors, generators, or similar support equipment.
- Knowledge of fiber optic cable handling practices and installation requirements.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Valid Class G Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
- Ability to safely tow equipment and compressor trailers.
- Clean driving record with no serious Highway Traffic Act offences within the past three years.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment as required.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Willingness to complete all company, client, union, and legislatively required training.
Preferred Certifications (Assets)
- Electrical Awareness Training Certification.
- Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Book 7 Traffic Control Certification.
- Ground Disturbance Certification.
- Confined Space Awareness Training.
- Experience supporting horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and utility construction operations.
- Additional telecommunications, utility construction, equipment operation, or safety-related certifications.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Frequent travel to various job sites throughout Ontario and surrounding areas as required.
- Overnight travel and hotel accommodations may be required depending on project location and operational needs.
- Overtime, weekend work, and extended work hours may be required based on project schedules.
- Physically demanding work involving lifting, carrying cable reels, walking, climbing, and working around construction equipment.

Union Compensation
This position is compensated in accordance with the applicable IUOE Local 793 Collective Agreement and includes access to negotiated wage rates, pension contributions, benefits, training opportunities, and other entitlements as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
