Job Title: Chief Operating Engineer
Job Summary: Our growing food manufacturing client in London is looking for an experienced Chief Operating Engineer to oversee the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility’s critical utility systems! This role provides technical leadership across industrial refrigeration, steam boilers, air compressors, and other essential plant infrastructure while supporting a team of shift operators.
This is a stable, long-term opportunity for a hands-on engineering professional who is ready to take ownership of plant utilities and contribute to the continued growth and efficiency of the operation.
Job Type: Full-time, permanent. 100% on site.
Job Location: London, ON.
Shift Structure: Day Shift (7-3PM), Flexible on OT and Weekends as Required
Compensation Structure: $45.00-$50.00 per hour + benefits

Responsibilities:
· Take overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of plant utility systems, including steam boilers, industrial refrigeration, air compressors, and hot water systems
· Monitor equipment performance and ensure utility systems operate reliably and efficiently
· Provide technical direction, guidance, and support to shift operators
· Ensure operating logs and regulatory documentation are accurately maintained
· Respond to operational concerns and provide support during after-hours or emergency situations involving refrigeration and boiler systems
· Maintain and improve operating procedures to support safe and consistent equipment operation
· Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime
· Coordinate required regulatory inspections with TSSA and external service providers
· Work closely with contractors and vendors to ensure maintenance and engineering work meets safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
· Identify opportunities to improve plant utility performance, energy efficiency, and overall operational effectiveness
· Support continuous improvement initiatives related to facility infrastructure and utility systems
· Ensure compliance with applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and food manufacturing requirements
· Promote and maintain standards related to GMP, HACCP, WHMIS, SDS, TSSA, and ESA
· Provide technical expertise and support for capital projects and facility improvements
· Collaborate with Plant Leadership, Maintenance, Production, contractors, and other departments to resolve technical and operational challenges
· Perform additional projects and responsibilities as assigned by management
Skills/Qualifications:
- Refrigeration Class B Certificate or 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate in accordance with TSSA requirements
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience working with ammonia-based industrial refrigeration systems
- Experience with CO₂ refrigeration systems is an asset
- 2–3 years of related experience within food manufacturing, beverage, or another industrial manufacturing environment is an asset
- Strong technical knowledge of steam boilers, refrigeration systems, air compressors, and other plant utility equipment
- Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Experience leading, guiding, or supporting operating/maintenance teams
- Strong understanding of applicable regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements
- Experience with CMMS and computerized work order/equipment management systems is an asset
- Comfortable working with contractors, vendors, regulatory representatives, and cross-functional teams
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and responding to urgent operational requirements
- Willingness and ability to participate in after-hours emergency support when required
