Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations with Team Lead Cook as the primary point of guidance the Cook 2 is responsible for the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals within the residential treatment centre. This role ensures that all meals are prepared in accordance with established menus, dietary requirements, and food safety standards.
The Cook 2 is responsible for carrying out cooking duties, coordinating meal preparation, and ensuring timely and consistent food service. This position maintains a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment and works collaboratively with kitchen staff to support efficient daily operations.
Education and training:
- Proof of successful completion of a post-secondary education in Culinary Skills/Chef Training Diploma or Cook Trade Certification preferred
- Safe Food Handling course required
Requirements:
- A negative Police Vulnerable Sector Check
- A valid class G driver’s license and proof of insurance.
- Daily access to a reliable vehicle.
- Current First Aid and CPR certificate required
- Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training or willingness to obtain.
- Able to lift at a minimum 50 lbs. from squatting to standing position
- Bilingualism (English/French) is a required
Experience:
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a commercial kitchen or food service environment
- Experience preparing meals in accordance with menus, dietary requirements, and portion control standards
- Experience working in institutional, healthcare, or residential settings is considered an asset
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, and safe food handling practices
- Understanding of sanitation, infection prevention, and kitchen safety regulations
- Ability to accurately follow standardized recipes, menus, and dietary guidelines, and modify as needed to meet changing priorities or client needs
- Strong organizational and time management skills in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team
- Attention to detail in food quality, presentation, and portion control
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support multiple kitchen tasks as needed
- Effective communication skills and ability to follow direction
- Basic inventory awareness and ability to support stock rotation (FIFO) practices
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks (lifting, bending, etc.)
- Basic working knowledge of computer software.
- Effective problem solving and decision-making skills
- Excellent interpersonal/verbal/written communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality as per PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act)
