Job Summary:
Reporting to the Program Manager - Patient & Family Support Services, the Patient & Family Educator uses a person-centred approach to provide education, information, support and referrals to patients and families affected by breast and other cancers throughout the cancer continuum (suspicion, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and palliative care). Empowering patients to make informed decisions is an essential aspect of this role.
This position supports patients and families to navigate the health care system and access services and resources. Working collaboratively with all members of the health care team and community stakeholders is an essential part of ensuring multi-disciplinary care. Education, community outreach and support in the development of strategies for the promotion of cancer education services are key elements of this position.
Qualifications:
Required:
Level of Formal Education & Experience
Bachelors Degree in Nursing required from an accredited educational institution
Minimum 3 years of recent nursing experience working in oncology
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated interpersonal and written communication and organizational skills
Understanding of the importance of information, open and honest patient / health care provider communication, and inclusion in the treatment decision making process
Strong understanding of health care equity and social determinants of health
Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills is essential
Strong computer skills in Outlook, Microsoft word, PowerPoint, and Publisher and videoconference technology (MS Teams)
Collaborative approach to multi-disciplinary work is essential
Knowledge of community outreach strategies Physical Requirements
Preferred
Master of Nursing Degree
Previous experience in teaching, education and program development is an asset
Experience working in breast cancer clinical care
Familiar/proficient in ARIA or electronic charting
Certified in Oncology Nursing (Canada) CON(C) is an asset
Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred
Experience working with equity denied populations
Experience and knowledge of adult learning
Excellent public speaking skills, experience with delivery of presentations
Experience and knowledge related to patient and public education, including development and evaluation of group education sessions
Required Licenses, Registrations, Designations
Must be a registered or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (C.R.N.M.)
