The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Research Assistant reports to the Principal Investigator and will support research projects that use the CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager platform.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for the end-to-end execution of CosMx spatial transcriptomics experiments, including slide preparation, tissue processing, reagent preparation, instrument setup, run execution, and post-run handling of samples in accordance with established protocols. The role includes performing routine quality control checks at all stages of the workflow, maintaining accurate and detailed experimental records, and ensuring proper sample tracking and inventory management.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), support and execute spatial transcriptomics research projects using the CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager platform

Independently perform and optimize experimental workflows, including tissue preparation, assay setup, instrument operation, quality control, and documentation

Contribute to experimental design, protocol development, and implementation of new procedures related to CosMx workflows

Conduct literature reviews and stay current with developments in spatial transcriptomics and related technologies

Ensure the reliable and safe operation of the CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager and associated laboratory equipment

Perform routine instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordination of service requirements when needed

Monitor and document quality control metrics throughout sample preparation and instrument runs
-
Maintain accurate laboratory records, experimental documentation, and sample tracking systems
-
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment in compliance with laboratory and biosafety standards

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with investigators, laboratory staff, trainees, collaborators, and lab personnel

Manage workload effectively, prioritize competing demands, and provide regular updates on project status and progress
Qualifications / Requirements:

MSc degree in Medical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences preferred, or a related field

1-3 years of hands-on experience operating the CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager

Demonstrated knowledge of the theory, principles, and practical application of spatial transcriptomics technologies, particularly CosMx

Experience performing end-to-end CosMx workflows, including tissue preparation, assay setup, instrument operation, quality control, and run monitoring

Ability to identify workflow challenges and recommend improvements to CosMx-related processes and procedures

Provide technical support and guidance to team members on CosMx workflows, troubleshooting, and best practices

Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized laboratory instrumentation

Experience working with a variety of biological specimens, including tissue samples and other biospecimens

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced research environment

Demonstrated communication, collaboration, and customer service skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines

Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and research data management is an asset
