Nellie’s European Deli is looking for a friendly, outgoing, and motivated individual to join our team.
The ideal candidate enjoys interacting with customers, takes initiative, and is willing to learn. You should be comfortable working in a busy, fast-paced environment and able to prioritize and manage several tasks at once while maintaining accuracy and excellent customer service.
Position Details
- Employment type: Permanent, part-time
- Hours: Approximately 10–20 hours per week
- Wage: $18.25 - $19.00 per hour
- Schedule: Daytime shifts between Monday and Saturday
- Location: In person at Nellie’s European Deli in Nanaimo
Position Summary
As a Deli Clerk, you will provide friendly and attentive customer service while preparing deli foods, assisting with grocery products, and helping maintain a clean and organized workplace.
This position is well suited to someone who enjoys working with people, stays productive during quieter periods, and can remain organized and efficient during busy periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve sandwiches, salads, soups, and other ready-to-eat foods
- Slice meats and cheeses using deli equipment safely and efficiently
- Assist customers with product selection and special orders
- Recommend deli products, grocery items, and current promotions
- Operate the cash register and process transactions accurately
- Prioritize and manage multiple customer orders and duties during busy periods
- Follow proper food-handling, sanitation, health, and safety procedures
- Wash dishes and maintain clean and organized deli, kitchen, and customer areas
- Stock shelves, rotate products, and create attractive grocery displays
- Receive, unpack, and put away stock orders
- Work collaboratively with team members to support daily operations
- Complete other reasonable duties as required
Skills and Qualifications

- Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and food safety
- Comfortable standing for extended periods and lifting up to 40 lbs
- Previous retail, deli, grocery, food-service, or customer-service experience is an asset
- FoodSafe Level 1 or another food-handling certification is an asset
- Familiarity with European or Dutch foods is an asset but is not required
