Pastry Chef
Salary: $45,000–$53,000 annually
UMAMI is looking for a creative, organized, and hands-on Pastry Chef to lead the pastry program for our opening team. This role is ideal for a pastry professional who is excited by scratch cooking, seasonal Ontario ingredients, and the opportunity to build a pastry program from the ground up.
The Pastry Chef will be responsible for developing and executing UMAMI’s dessert program across dinner service, takeout, events, and special offerings. Working closely with the Head Chef and kitchen leadership, you will help shape a pastry program that reflects UMAMI’s broader Asian-inspired, Ontario-focused approach.
Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day operation of the pastry station and dessert program.
- Develop and execute desserts, baked goods, sauces, creams, ice creams, and other pastry components from scratch.
- Create desserts that incorporate Asian techniques, ingredients, and flavour profiles while maintaining UMAMI’s farm-to-table Ontario identity.
- Develop and maintain standardized recipes, prep lists, production schedules, and plating specifications.
- Manage pastry prep and ensure consistent execution during service.
- Maintain high standards for quality, presentation, cleanliness, organization, and food safety.
- Work closely with the Head Chef on menu development, tastings, seasonal changes, and special events.
- Assist with costing recipes, managing pastry inventory, and minimizing waste.
- Train and mentor cooks and other team members working within the pastry program.
- Maintain proper mise en place and ensure the pastry station is fully stocked and service-ready.
- Participate in tastings, mock services, staff training, and menu development.
- Help establish efficient systems for pastry production as the restaurant grows.
What We’re Looking For
- Professional pastry or culinary experience, ideally in a restaurant, hotel, bakery, or fine-dining environment.
- Graduation from a culinary or pastry arts program is preferred.
- Strong understanding of pastry fundamentals and scratch production.
- Excellent organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with the broader kitchen team.
- Strong attention to detail and consistency.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen.
- Creative approach to flavour, texture, and presentation.
- A genuine interest in Asian ingredients, techniques, and Ontario products.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Food Handler certification or willingness to obtain one.
What UMAMI Offers
- $45,000–$53,000 annual salary, based on experience.
- Opportunity to build and lead a pastry program from the ground up.
- Creative input into menu development and seasonal programming.
- A scratch kitchen focused on Ontario ingredients and Asian culinary influences.
- Opportunities for professional growth as the restaurant develops.
- A collaborative kitchen environment where creativity, organization, and teamwork are valued.
UMAMI is committed to creating a kitchen culture built on respect, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning. We are looking for someone who wants to help build something, not simply fill a position.
