The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time/ Fixed Term position is for approximately 16 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
The position requires that the candidate works independently in a research/teaching environment and requires a high degree of creativity, judgment, decision-making, and attention to detail.
This position will have an office located at the VLC, Spyhill Campus however, occasional travel to W.A Ranches and the Foothills Campus may be required. This position is full-time working 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but on occasion there may be a need to work outside of regular hours.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
This position consists of 2 major components:

Research. The successful applicant will be given an existing data set on cattle welfare and will analyze and collaboratively write a scientific publication for journal submission. This position may support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others

Youth Education. This position requires the development of at least 2 web-based learning modules on a variety of aspects of the beef industry to support a web-based certificate aimed at a national audience. The successful candidate will also review and revise existing content for the web-based certificate. Finally, this position will be involved in the development and delivery outreach/educational materials focused on the cow/calf aspect of beef ranching. The delivery of some of the programs developed is likely to occur on weekends.
Qualifications / Requirements:

Must have a PhD in beef cattle behaviour and welfare

Must have direct evidence of scholarly activity (publications) in beef cattle behaviour and welfare
-
Expertise in beef cattle lameness is an asset

Experience in the statistical analysis of scientific data is required

Very strong organizational and time management skills are essential
-
Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative manner
-
Must be open to learning and development, and willing to accept new changes and assignments

Experience with advance statistical approaches

Experience developing educational programs for youth is preferred

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
-
Must be flexible with the ability to prioritize and refocus to meet deadlines

Strong work ethic

Strong attention to detail

Knowledge of the University of Calgary processes and procedures is desirable

The position requires the ability to develop web-based content and social media skills

The position requires a driver class 5 license
